Homework answers / question archive / Quality arguments require some form of reasoning, but not all reasoning is equal
Quality arguments require some form of reasoning, but not all reasoning is equal. Additionally, sometimes individuals make claims with little or no reasoning to support their claims. While we will engage in a critical evaluation of claims next week, we need to first be able to identify the reasoning in various arguments.
For this forum discussion, you need to read the prompt below and complete all parts of the prompt. If you have not already done so, please read the Forum Instructions page posted in the resources for this week and review the rubric that demonstrates how this discussion is graded.
1. Find two articles that make arguments. These articles should be from reputable, credible local, national, or international news sources. Make sure you have an APA reference for both articles. Each article should make an argument using one of the major types of reasoning identified in this week's reading, and should represent different reasoning types (i.e. don't pick two deductive reasoning arguments).
2. For each article, summarize the argument in 30-50 words. Be concise - this isn't about the claim but we need to know what the claim is and how it was reached.
3. Identify the type of reasoning used to make the argument in each article. What makes it that type of reasoning? Be specific, using examples to demonstrate how you reached that conclusion.
4. Which article makes a stronger argument? I am not concerned with your opinion about the claim - we are evaluating the construction of the argument using reasoning. How does the use/type of reasoning make this a stronger argument?
5. How could the weaker argument be improved through the use of reasoning? Be specific.
