Homework 2
Construction site utilization planning (jobsite layout planning)
This assignment aims to create a site logistics plan for the university Houston’s
College of Technology Building (Technology Annex).
Purpose
The reason for creating a site logistics plan on a construction project is to:
• Create order on the site
• Maintain safety for workers and the public
• Allow for materials procurement/handling / management
• Provide access and egress
• Provide space for equipment and work areas
Create order
A construction site changes every minute. If the site is not properly managed, it becomes a safety hazard and a liability. On the contrary, a well-organized site allows consistent progress throughout the project. As the job site constantly changes, the site utilization plan can evolve to communicate changes to the entire project team.
Safety
Workers and public safety are the top priority of a construction site. With attention to detail when planning site activities and placing temporary materials, the risk of injury is greatly reduced.
Materials
Every site has unique challenges with the purchase and storage of materials. Ideally, all materials could arrive at the site just in time for installation. This can help reduce the amount of space that materials take up for storage and reduce the number of
times materials need to be moved, which can lead to damage before installation.
Carefully planning, tracking, and storing materials helps ensure that suitable materials
are shipped and stored optimally, so construction crews can effectively install them.
Access and egress
Construction sites require access and egress of materials, people, and equipment,
among others. Getting these different people and objects around the side requires
careful planning and consideration. When laying out the job site, design the site in a
way that allows all necessary people and objects to navigate the site efficiently.
Equipment/work areas
Planning spaces for construction equipment and work activities efficiently affects the
overall efficiency of the project. As a result of planning, the equipment used can be
utilized to provide the highest output with the least amount of input possible. Planning
can also reduce safety hazards during construction by minimizing trade stacking.
Assignment
This assignment is individual homework to create a three-dimensional (3D) site
utilization plan. From the base plan provided, you can model the elements needed for
construction operations. The assignment will be graded on the following.
• Using and organizing all the “elements and constraints” mentioned below
• Ability to communicate your plan in the model.
Background of the project
The College of Technology building on the main campus, the Technology Annex
building, will be demolished to construct a new five-story building sometime in the near
future. The footprint of the new building will be very similar to that of the existing one.
Challenges
As with every project, there are certain challenges and constraints. The constraints
that exist in this project are the following.
• Construction must be completed before the start of the 2025 fall semester.
• The news facility needs to tie into existing utility lines
Elements and Constraints
The elements that must be used for your site logistics plans are the following.
• Minimum one tower crane with a boom radius of XXX feet (choose) to
reach the extent of the construction activities.
• There will be two single-wide trailers (12 feet by 24 feet) and one
quadruple-wide trailer (48 feet by 24 feet). There must be 6 feet between
the trailers.
• Two dumpsters (8 feet by 20 feet) for trash.
• Two dumpsters for recycling LEED credits (8 feet by 20 feet). There must be
4 feet from the dumpster to another object.
• Ten portable toilets (4 feet by 4 feet).
• A muster area of 2,500 square feet.
• 6 Conex box (7 feet by 16 feet).
• Sixty feet by 100 feet temporary lay-down area. Conex boxes may be located
in this area.
• Entry and exit for all traffic should be planned based on the situation on the
ground
• A 20-foot-wide fire access lane that must not be obstructed during
construction.
• There must be a construction fence around the whole project.
• Most trees and utility tunnels must be preserved.
Deliverables
• Complete site utilization/logistic plan using SketchUp
• Submit the model file (SKP and PDF) through Blackboard
• Point paper (see sample) describing the intent, goals, and design of site logistic
• Submit pint paper as MS Word and PDF.
