Please choose one of the following topics and write an essay on it to be submitted as part of
your coursework.
1. Discuss the notions of social solidarity and assabiya as core concepts in theories of society by
Emile Durkheim and Ibn Khaldun respectively. Compare the two concepts and use one of them
as a conceptual framework to analyse the Namibian society?
2. Compare Du Bois notion of colour line and Karl Marx’s class in the analysis of society. Argue
for one of the concepts as a better conceptual framework in the analysis of the Namibian Society.

As part of your coursework, you will be required to submit an essay of 1,000 words (3 pages at
1.5 line spacing, 12p font and 2.5 cm page margins). Your essay must be written effecting the
following requirements:
• It must have a minimum of 1,000 words.
• A minimum of four references must be consulted to write the essay.
• The essay must be structured to include: An introduction, a body with relevant heading and subheadings, and a conclusion.
· In-text and bibliographic references must be clearly written. American Psychological
Association (APA) referencing style is preferred at the University of Namibia (UNAM).
