This assignment has evolved a bit to adapt to circumstances, but I think there will be something in it to suit everyone's interests, talents, skills, and learning goals--that is, I think that you will all find something in it that you can learn from. The overarching theme of the assignment is making connections between different social justice issues/movements and issues/movements related to the environment, climate change, and sustainability, particularly in the context of youth-led movements but potentially embracing intergenerational movements as well. Assignment That's a very big theme, but for this assignment you will be asked to explore it in one of two ways: Event/Action Plan. Drawing on our readings in Youth to Power and Challenge Everything as well as your own interests, experiences, and passions, work together to plan and propose an event or action that supports, embodies, and celebrates the connections between these issues/movements. The who, what, when, where, and how are up to you, but here are some recommendations: Plan it for Late Summer or Fall, i.e., when we hope COVID will no longer be such a risk; and aim for something that is Chicago-areawide, rather than something more specifically local or something regional or national, simply because that is the area that seems easiest to plan for and most likely to get a good (if hypothetical) turnout. The Team: Steve, Sam, Matthew, Marium, Dayana, Karolina, and one more. The Deliverable: A written proposal of about 6 pages that includes a description of the proposed even or action, what would be the goal(s), and who would be involved, as well as some samples of proposed messaging: for example, name of the event; associated taglines, calls to action, and visuals; content for signs, banners, and flyers; and possible social media posts. All members of the team will contribute to this final product, but sub-teams might be created who are primarily responsible for research, coalition planning, event/action design/logistics, messaging, and other specific tasks. Additional Readings: 1. Revisit Youth to Power Chapters 4, 6, & 8; and 2. Beautiful Trouble (Links to an external site.) Display Case. Drawing on our readings in Youth to Power and Challenge Everything as well as your own interests, talents, and skills, work together with Dominican's Sustainability Coordinator to plan and create a display for the Parmer Hall Sustainability case that educates about and celebrates the connections between these issues/movements, specifically in the context of youth-led movements. The Team: Enzo, Jennifer, Jovana, Yessenia, Mariana, and two more. The Deliverable: A completed display case that includes a unifying visual theme, objects/artwork embodying this theme, informative/expressive signage, and other forms of messaging/engagement. Ideally, the project will also include a virtual component; details to be determined. All members of the team will contribute to this final product, but sub-teams might be created who are primarily responsible for research, overall display design, collection of objects, creation of artworks, signage/messaging, physical arrangement of the case, and other specific tasks. ENGL 335 04/16/2021 The Green DU Festival Proposal We are proposing a two-day educational event that culminates with a campus music festival, for late summer 2021. The event will spotlight the history, goals and challenges of Chicagoland’s environmental issues. Chicago (and its surrounding suburbs) enjoys a large and diverse population. It is the home of many different industries. As a result, there is a rich and complicated story to tell. Our goal is to tell this story by showing participants via toxic tours of diverse neighborhoods, by connecting participants to local experts via a roundtable discussion and by celebrating progress with participants via a campus wide music festival. On Day 1 of the event, we would like to host toxic tours, conducted by local non-profits whose mission is to promote awareness of environmental issues. These tours are already an established event for local non-profits and take approximately an hour. Groups of participants are taken to specific neighborhoods and are shown toxic sites and educated about the impact on the community and what is needed for remediation. We propose getting people together, taking them on the tours and then coming back to campus and discussing the events and facts learned and what we, as a community, could do to help. The discussion will take place via a roundtable panel, in Lund Auditorium. The panel will include a representative from each non-profit, a representative from Sustain DU and at least one, student representative. On Day 2 DU will host a music festival that will promote steps we can take to reduce our carbon footprint, and celebrate the progress that has been made. The festival will include local vendors, who have some affiliation to “green” solutions. Musicians will be local bands, willing to donate their time (including DU student musicians, if they’d like to tryout). As we write this proposal, Covid-19 restrictions are still in place, in Illinois. We hope that the restrictions will be lifted by the date of the event. However, we are committed to adhering to any state restrictions and CDC guidance concerning, masks, cleaning protocols, Covid questionnaires and social distancing. Goals The purpose of this event is to educate, spread awareness, and bring together a community that genuinely cares about making the world a better place. We would also like to use this as an opportunity to promote Dominican University and its own sustainability initiatives, particularly Sustain DU. We hope that the spotlight on Sustain DU will draw more students to its mission. Finally, through this event, we would like to donate to all of the non-profits who conduct the toxic tours and to Sustain DU. We will raise money in three ways: corporate donations, individual donations, and ticket sales. Corporate donations will consist of three tiers of corporate sponsorships: bronze, silver and gold. Each tier is based on the amount of a monetary donation. The Bronze Tier will start with donations of $1000 and corporations in that tier will receive a “thank-you” in the event program. Silver Tier donations will start with $3,000. Those donors will receive a “thank-you” in the event program and will also be listed as a donor on all social media platforms. Gold Tier members will have donated at least $5,000. They will receive a “thank you” in the event program, be listed as a donor on all social media and their names and logos will be prominently displayed on all event banners. Corporate donations will be obtained by volunteer students, calling local corporations to solicit money. We will also reach out to alumni for their corporate connections. Finally, we will contact all vendors of Dominican University (e.g. Follett’s, Kimco, etc.). Since DU is their customer, we anticipate that they will be willing to donate, to this event. Individual donations will be solicited through social media and direct emails to alumni. We would also like to stream the event and allow watchers to donate, via a pay app, in real time (see below). There are many apps that DU can use for this event, or DU could add this event to their paid giving site, already in place https://connect.dom.edu/give. There will be a ticket charge for the music part of this event. Students, faculty and admins will be exempt from the charge. However, non-DU participants, including online watchers, will be charged a small fee of $5.00. Possible Participants The toxic tours would be conducted by local non-profits. A representative from each would also participate in the roundtable discussion. We hope to have a representative from LVEJO (Little Village), The Climate Reality Project (Chicago) and People for Community Recovery (Altgeld Gardens). In addition, we would like to have a local politician and a Sustain DU member participate. The selected non-profits represent the rich diversity of our city. They have all been active in the fight for environmental justice for a long time. The music festival would consist of local bands and vendors who would set up booths for the students. The vendors would be chosen from businesses that promote sustainability (e.g. organic farming, bee keeping, recycling, etc.). We would request that Sustain DU promote itself too. Publicity Strategies There are logistics we have yet to figure out, but we would market mostly through social media and with posters designed by us to keep the costs down and the audiences more open and broader. We will reach out to alumni via emails. We will sell tickets and have registrations open in order to count the people attending and plan accordingly, for Covid-19 restrictions. The music festival will have music and bands who share our common thoughts about climate change, and hopefully we will get them to play for a smaller or reduced price. We would need to do research on how many people would be allowed to attend the tours and how many people we could have in the music festival. We would sell refreshments that are all made from locally owned businesses to also support small businesses after such a rough year with the pandemic. We are currently working with DU Administration to determine what releases we would need to stream the event on DU’s Facebook page and You Tube channel. At a minimum, we will need clearances to broadcast the musicians, roundtable and booths. We will also need signed waivers that protect DU from lawsuits due to accidents or unanticipated damages. Messaging & Advertisement for Event Below is a sample poster and flyer that can be shared among students and local neighborhoods to start getting a number of individuals that would be interested in the event. In this sample the date, Covid information, contact information, and charge for tickets are not included. Keeping in mind that those details are important, they will be included when further information is collected and there is an actual date to know what will have to be added or changed in the sample flyer. This flyer can also be used as a post on social media to advertise on Facebook, Instagram, EngageDU, and shared with other local organizations or non-profits. Here is a sample social media post that can be put on any social media platform to advertise and spread awareness about the goals and mission of the event. Not all information is included, but can be added when closer to the date regarding COVID, date, time, location, and other details. Event planning team 04/02/2021 The event we are proposing is a two day music festival and round table discussion that will focus on our carbon footprint and the pollution in areas of Chicago. We propose getting people together, taking them on tours and then coming back and having a discussion about the events and facts learned and what we could do to help. We also propose a music festival on the second day that would promote steps we can take to reduce our carbon footprint. The money raised will be to benefit a charity of our choice that would focus on educating about climate change. The round table discussion will be indoors, therefore we will enforce mask wearing and the music festival will be outdoors to promote a safe socially distanced event. This will all happen in late summer, given the situation with COVID will hopefully be more calm and under control. The purpose of this event is to educate, spread awareness, and also bring together a community that truly cares about making the world a better place. There are logistics we have yet to figure out but we would market mostly through social media and with posters designed by us in order to keep the costs down and the audiences more open and broad. We would sell tickets pr have registrations open in order to count the people and plan accordingly. The music festival would have music and bands who share our common thoughts about climate change and hopefully we would get them to play for a smaller or reduced price. We would need to do research on how many people would be allowed to attend the tours and how many people we could have in the music festival.
