DOE 1 American History John Doe University of California at Fresno 26 April 2021 DOE 2 ID 1: Shays Rebellion The Shay Rebellion was an armed movement named after Daniel Shays, a farmer, and former soldier. The uprising conducted series of attacks on courthouses and various government properties in Massachusetts. These violent attacks began in 1786 resulting in a full-propelled military confrontation in 1787. The armed rebels were comprised of mostly ex-revolutionary war soldiers who had become farmers. They opposed the state economic policies that spurred poverty and foreclosures of property. I chose Shays Rebellion because its causes resulted in the economic reforms in the USA. Some of its causes include the little compensation paid to farmers that fought in the revolutionary war and the higher taxes expected to be paid to Massachusetts compared to those that the residents previously paid to the British. Also, the businesses in Boston were required to pay for goods Purchased by farmers on credit yet there was no paper money nor valuables such as gold or silver to settle the debts. ID 2: Second Great Awakening, The second awakening was a religious revival in the United States beginning from the late 18 century to 19 century. Although it occurs in every part of the US, it was particularly strong in the Midwest and Northeast. It began as a revival in 179 and later became a movement in 1800. After 1820, the number of members had increased rapidly among Baptist and Methodist congregation, whose preachers formed the leadership of the movement. DOE 3 The formation of the second great awakening resulted in various incidences that initiated people to question the British monarchy rule. As a result of the movement, American society became more transparent with more horizontal and less vertical due to its impact. It allowed the common people other than the elite to speak during the mass religious revivals that occur as camp meetings. I chose the Second Great Awakening because it altered the religious climate, and many people were persuaded to dedicate their lives to serving God and living in godly ways. There was also an increase in women's involvement in the revival in support of women's rights. Due to these factors, the desire for creating reforms for the United States arose. ID 3: Market revolution. In the 1820s and 1830s, the market revolutions transformed American business and trade worldwide. Factories and mass production rapidly replaced independent artisans. There was a drastic growth in farms and produced goods from distant, markets and were shipped through inexpensive transportation such as Erie Canal in New York. The economy was transforming by accommodating the technologies of the industrial revolution. The primary reason for selecting market revolution is because it brought changes in various sectors as it grew across the country. The farmers were now growing crops for profit instead of self-sufficiency. Various factories and cities were formed in the North and a new middle class was created. Several people both men and women were freed from the dependence of servitude by working in the cash economy. Also, the government effected policies that increased the growth of capitalism. Equally, the demand for cotton increased, hence increasing slavery. DOE 4 Part II: Connection Fact 1 The Shay rebellion and Second Great Awakening fostered better reforms in the USA. Fact 2 The Market revolution changed the economic conditions Connection: The United States was facing economic issues with farmers facing challenges to pay their debts and only depending on farming for self-sufficiency. After the shay’s rebellion and second awakening, people sought new reforms. Due to the industrial revolution, the market experienced a revolution with production levels and commercial agriculture being strengthened hence strengthening the financial abilities of farmers. Part III: Geographical Connection Fact 1: Erie Canal made New York the center of business and the most economically important city. Fact 2: New York, Massachusetts was among the North and Midwest parts that engaged in Shay's rebellion and underwent a second great awakening Connection: The shays rebellion occurred to create a need for better economic reforms that favored American farmers and businesses. The taxation and debt ratio were escalating and there was a need for reforms. Equally, the second great awakening was required to create positive perceptions of the Americans and create a need to support women and the poor. Due to these events, the market revolution occurred and elevated cities such as New York and Massachusetts by changing farming methods from subsistence farming to commercial farming. DOE 5 Part IV: Overall Takeaways My key takeaways from this unit are that America has undergone several revolutionary events. In the late 18th century and 19 century, many people were ex-soldiers and farmers. However, the economic policies did not favor them. They were paying more taxes compared to those paid to the British. They also had too much debt and were plummeting into poverty. To demand reforms the shays rebellion occurred in Massachusetts to force the statement government to review the policies. Besides, the second great awakening later happened to create a moral sense of supporting the poor rather than the elite as well as women. Afterward, the revolutionary events resulted in the market revolution. Together with the industrial revolution, they fueled the market revolution hence creating a better economic environment for the Americans and particularly, the farmers. DOE 6 References 8.
