PROJECT 2

  • For this project you can choose a project subject that is more relevant to your major, i.e. bio- or mech-.
  • If you do not have a major-related project idea, then you can do the ‘by-default’ project outlined below.
  • Either way, please pay attention to deliverables and/or consult you instructor if you have any questions.

‘By-default’ project description:  Design and create a cellphone protection cover with built-in kickstand.

  • Design 3D CAD model, and 3D print your model.
  • Your design can be for any cellphone that is commercially available today. Make sure to state, in the intro paragraph of your submission, what phone make/model your case is designed for.
  • Stand piece should be 3D printed in place (at the same time along with case body).

Deliverables: Put the following items in a MS-Word document and submit on Blackboard.

  1. Write a brief INTRO paragraph to describe your work. State which software packages you use for every step (CAD, slicing, etc).
  2. Insert 3D model view of your design (screen shot of 3D model, as many different views as needed, minimum 1 view)
  3. Screen shot of slicer with your model (Print3D screen, if you are using SW). If applicable, show the support and other important details.
  4. Photo of your 3D printed final product. Consider including multiple photos demonstrating the motion and range of the stand (closed position, fully open position, etc.)
  5. Test your printed object (if it is a phone case, try it on a phone) and write a CONCLUSION paragraph in which you should discuss operation of your printed object (If it is phone case, discuss how the fit is).

Here are the important questions you should address: is case fitting well?, is stand operating well?, are power cable and headphones cable plugging well?, any design mistakes?, any 3D printing issues?, any lessons learnt for the next iteration?, any other stuff you think that is important to mention? (It is OK if you end up with a flawed case, you are learning, just be brutally honest to yourself)

  1. (if you are NOT using SW, then email your CAD file and STL file).

Due date: Saturday 11:59 PM, July-2nd
