Due Date: July 6, 2022 at 11:50pm.
Length: minimum of 5 double-spaced pages; maximum of 7 pages in 12-point type using Times
New Roman font or another common font. Use 1-inch margins. (The works cited page
does not count toward the 5 pages.)
Format: You will use the format for a claim of fact paper (at the end of this assignment).
Number of Sources: Use a minimum of 8 sources. Wikipedia will not be allowed as a source.
Your sources may be the same as the sources you documented in your annotated bibliography,
but you may find that some do not work as well as you initially thought or that you need
additional ones.
Style: MLA. Use in-text citations. Include a Works Cited list on its own page at the end of your
essay. This does not count toward the minimum number of pages.
Submission Info:
We will do a peer review for this paper. Post the final draft in the final draft drop box. Drop
boxes will be in the unit module.
How you will be graded:
This paper is worth 100 points. The rubric will be posted with the dropbox for the final draft.
Assignment:
Write an argumentative essay supporting your claim of fact. This paper will argue that an issue
or problem exists, but you won’t suggest a way to solve the problem. The format for this paper
is different from the format you used for the rhetorical analysis paper. This uses the typical
structure of an introduction that ends with the claim/thesis, a body that supports the claim, and
a conclusion, but there are some differences from the position paper you may have written in
comp I.
This is more than a report on the issue, and it is not an argument of what your stance is on the
issue, trying to get the reader to agree with you. In the claim of fact paper, you will be arguing
that this issue is a problem. You need to convince your reader that a problem exists, has
existed, or will exist in the future and support it with good reasons why it is a problem. Be as
specific as possible about what the problem is. As part of your argument, you will also
acknowledge that there are other views, but you will refute those views with your own strong
argument.
Keep in mind that your audience will also consist of people who disagree with you. Stay as
objective as possible to draw in those who may not be as open to your views. Use your research

to show why their point of view is not as convincing as your own. For example, some people do
not believe that climate change is a real issue. Consider what you would need to say to
convince them that it is real. What evidence would you produce that proves this to the reader?
Some things to note: You will be claiming that an issue exists now, existed in the past, or will
exist in the future. I will expect to see mostly factual evidence to back up your claim. This can
be examples, quotes by credible authorities, or anecdotes. You do not propose a solution to the
problem in this paper. Also keep in mind that you will support your claim using logos, ethos, and
pathos, but predominantly logos (logic).
Even though this is an academic paper, you will still want to draw your readers in with an
engaging introduction that captures their interest and leaves them wanting to read on. The
introduction may also give the context for your argument as well as clearly stating your claim.
The context would provide information that will help the reader understand your argument
more. Context may be historical, cultural, social, etc.
Since you’ll have information from your research to synthesize and present, you’ll need to be
careful to keep your writing clear, organized, and focused. Present an interesting discussion of
your point of view by including and also responding to others' opposing views. It’s important
that you acknowledge and counter any opposing view.
The conclusion will sum up your argument or restate your claim (using different words from
your thesis). In a policy claim essay, you might in your conclusion call for some action to be
taken, but not in this paper.
Point of view: It’s OK to occasionally reference first person “I” or “we” in the paper. DO NOT
USE SECOND PERSON “YOU” IN THIS PAPER. Most often you will be using third person.
A claim of fact paper will predominantly depend on logos for support

Research
? Your initial research will be completed when you complete the annotated bibliography.
? Focus your research with a question that you want to answer about the issue.
? An example: How will stricter auto emissions standards create new, more competitive
auto industry jobs?
? Begin your research with the library’s web site.
? For this assignment you must have at least 1 academic journal, 1 book (eBooks are OK),
and 1 credible Internet source.
The other sources may be any of these 3 types of sources.

Topics
Topics not allowed: abortion or any topic that is more philosophical, such as religion. Most
other topics will be allowed. If you aren’t sure, email me. You will most likely use the same topic
you used for your annotated bibliography.
Format: A claim of fact will follow this format
Introduction:
? Hook (This can be a quote, a question, a strong statement, an anecdote, a statistic
that you quote, or a hypothetical situation. The introduction should begin with
general information about your topic and become more specific, ending in your
thesis statement.
? Context/background information (what does the reader need to know about the
topic to understand it.
? Claim/thesis statement (the last sentence or two in your introduction).
Body:
? Back up your claim - Talk about what you have to go on to prove your points are
true.
? Make several points about the argument – provide support and evidence to prove
your claim. (Make as many points as necessary to prove your claim).
? Acknowledge and refute the opposing side – do this where it seems most fitting. This
is where you look at what others think about the topic. Don’t take a “I’m right and
they are wrong” approach, but rather show some significant reasons why your
argument is stronger or where there are some gaps in their argument. How you
approach the opposing view needs to be logical and tactful. Remember, you are also
writing to people who may disagree with you. Coming on too strong may lose your
reader, and it definitely won’t persuade them to change their mind.
? Remember when quoting that long quotes (over 4 lines long) are dealt with
differently in your text than are short quotes. The quote is moved down must be
indented ½ inch from the left and remove the quotation marks. The in-text citation

is placed after the period. Use a hanging indent for your works cited and alphabetize
your list.
Conclusion:
? Summarize your argument or

? Provide no new information in your conclusion.
Works Cited
? Use MLA style, 8th edition. Cite only those sources that you refer to in your paper
(There should also be a corresponding in-text citation in your paper).
? The list should be titled “Works Cited,” double-spaced, and placed by itself on the
last page of your paper.
? Your works cited list will use a hanging indent and will be alphabetized by the first
word in each citation, usually the author’s first name.
? If you quote, paraphrase, or summarize something from another source, then you
must cite it in the text of your paper and at the end of your paper.
