Ethical Dilemma Paper

  1. Reflect back on an ethical dilemma you have encountered in your student nursing experiences. Remember a dilemma indicates that there are two ethical issues that conflict such as giving a medication to treat a condition that could potentially harm the patient.
  2. Identify the Issues
    • What are the major conflicting ethical issues raised by this case?
      • Should be more broad than just the ethical principles involved such as death and dying, pain control, patient safety etc..
  3. Outline the Options
    • What are the main alternative actions or policies that might be followed in responding to the ethical issues in this case?
      • What can be done (give the medication, don’t give the medication)
    • What are the major views (evidence based practice, ANA etc…) on the ethical issues raised by this case?
      • What does the evidence, guidelines and policies tell us we should do or not do?
  4. Construct Ethical Arguments
    • Determine which two of the four common healthcare ethical principles (nonmalefience, beneficence, justice, respect for autonomy) apply to this case.
      • Should identify two that are in conflict
    • Identify the ethical principles that can be invoked to support a conclusion as to what ought to be done ethically in this case or similar cases?
      • Which ones support which side
  5. Make a Decision
    • Decide which of the identified options you would recommend or judge to be the ethically best way to deal with the issue presented in this case based upon which option has the strongest ethical reasons behind it.
    • Identify arguments that could be presented against your decision and present a rebuttal or counter-argument in defense of your judgment.
