Content analysis in sum is a critique or taking a socially critical lens of different texts. Texts can be written text, magazines, music lyrics, photographs, posters, movies, commercials, T.V. shows, diaries, etc. It can be done either quantitatively (counting how many times a black or brown man is depicted as a criminal on the news) or it can be done qualitatively (reading between the lines and finding themes about my photographs of places individuals fear sexual assault. In what communities are these pictures? Or on rape preventative literature why is the victim always a thin white woman and the perpetrator a large and often faceless man?). For your lab, you will be doing the qualitative version.

In other words, I want you to choose a T.V. show or movie and do the following:

For this section you will be describing what you see and read in the movie/show. This should be one page.

• You should be thinking about “deconstructing” the T.V. show or movie, that is to say – analyzing it with a critical eye and not just taking it at face value.

• Pull several themes from the TV show or movie

• Keep in mind the following categories of representation (gender, age, race/ethnicity, social class)

• What type of message is the TV show sending to the viewer?

• Support your analysis with examples

• Summarize your findings
