Discuss why the correctional system in the United States has grown so much. What are the pros and cons of this growth? Provide current examples, and cite your sources in APA format. "Over the past quarter-century, the incarceration rate has more than quadrupled, even though the crime rate in the United States has been declining for over two decades. Along with the steady growth in America’s prison population, the number of taxpayer dollars spent on building and operating prisons has also substantially increased. The expansion of the prison population is difficult to understand in light of lower crime rates, state budgetary problems, and the easing of tough sentencing policies in some states". (Clear, Reisig, Petrosino, & Cole, 2017, p. 142) The pros of these growths are that the correction houses in the correction system are not just to punish the criminals but also to eliminate the criminal activities from the society. The rehabilitation for instance in the criminal houses helps the criminals to reform themselves and integrate back into society (Clear, Reisig, Petrosino, & Cole, 2017, p. 340). The cons of these growths are that the correction system requires huge amounts of funds to smooth running and facilitate its operations. Correction houses lack adequate funds to use in rehabilitating the offenders. There has been an increase in the number of crimes recently as compared to the previous days. This has resulted in overcrowding of correction systems and prisons, making it difficult for the corrections systems to provide necessary facilities to all the prisoners (Clear, Reisig, Petrosino, & Cole, 2017, p. 344). Discussion 2 (TB) Discuss why the correctional system in the United States has grown so much. What are the pros and cons of this growth? Provide current examples, and cite your sources in APA format. Correction systems in the United States encompass secure detention facilities like jails and prisons, however, it also includes programs and personnel. The correction systems have grown so much because currently, the correction system has outweighed the traditional prison system. The correction system is made up of separate institutions specifically for adults and juveniles. These institutions focus on rehabilitation and several disciplinary policies. The pros of this growth are that the correction houses in the correction system are not just to punish the criminals but also to eliminate the criminal activities from the society. The cons of this growth are, the correction system requires huge amounts of funds to be used in the smooth running and facilitation of its operations. Correction houses lack adequate funds to use in rehabilitating the offenders. There has been an increase in the number of crimes recently as compared to the previous days. This has resulted in overcrowding of correction systems and prisons thereby making it difficult for the corrections systems to provide necessary facilities to all the prisoners. Reference: Gary W. American Corrections in Brief (3 rd ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. Discussion 3 (EM) Discuss why the correctional system in the United Stated has grown so much. What are the pros and cons of this growth? The correctional system in the U.S. is an agency or network, which manages the prisons, parole, and probation board of criminals. Policies related to laws are the main reason why the correctional system in the U.S. has grown so much. Some would debate an increase in crime is the main reasons, but this is not the case. Those policies have resulted in mass incarceration rates sky rocketing in the U.S. – simply put, overcrowding of jails and prisons. Longer sentencing and longer terms has made the problem greater. Sentencing with The War on Drugs played a huge role in the overall growth of corrections. The number of women in jails has also been increasing. Life sentences with or without parole have also increased. Policy makers aggressively promoted measures that greatly increased incarceration rates. They adopted imprisonment as a key tool for crime control. Prison time is often mandated for offenses that previously were punished through community sanctions. Throughout this significant shift in penal policy, the possibility of negative social consequences was either not considered or disregarded. Nor did policy makers adequately consider the possibility that the crime reduction effects of the prison expansion might be modest (Dune, 2017). The cost of expanding the penal system has been substantial. The financial costs are left to the taxpayers, who provide funding for local jails, state and federal prisons, and the operations of the larger criminal justice apparatus associated with incarceration. The opportunity cost is also considerable. Spending on prisons diverts resources from more effective public safety strategies, services for crime victims, or programs designed to help achieve effective reintegration of people who have been released from prisons. The burden of incarceration also falls on the millions in incarcerated individuals and, the evidence suggests, their families and neighborhoods. More broadly, as a consequences of unprecedented rise in incarceration rates, the larger society bears the costs of an expanded share of the populations that struggles with stigma and negative effects of the prison experience (Pattavina & Taxman, 2013, p.4). More than 60% of the people in prison today are people of color. Black men are six times as likely to be incarcerated as white men and Hispanic men are 2.7 times as likely. For black men in 30’s, about 1 in every 12 in prison or jail on any given day (Stemen, 2017). Thanks References Duwe, D. (2017). Five dilemmas facing corrections are described in this final chapter; dilemmas in mission, methods, structure, personnel, and costs. Select two of these, describe the dilemma, and provide an example. Describe two possible solutions for each dilemma. Provide citations in APA format. There are five dilemmas facing corrections today. The dilemmas are method, mission, structure, personnel, and cost. The two dilemmas I've selected to describe are personnel and cost. Both of these dilemmas need attention, or the future of corrections might face more issues, if they are not confronted and addressed. Understanding them, how they function, and having a plan to ensure they are addressed is absolutely essential to the success and operations of corrections. What sets the U.S. corrections system apart from those elsewhere in the world today is that it is so big. Since the mid-1970s, by every measure, the American corrections system has grown by unprecedented amounts (Clear et al., 2017, p. 335). The cost associated with corrections is always a point of topic, and the method in which most prisons operate function as a direct result of taxpayer funded revenue. Funding is oftentimes one of the biggest issues facing prison. Regardless of how well the economy is doing, corrections always face funding issues, as they never see increases in funding. Conversely, when budget cuts are required, corrections are often considered a prime source for budget cuts. Prisons are expensive to build and, once operational, expensive to maintain. It cost a lot of revenue to fund prisons, due to the facilities, employees, food, water, electricity, and other expenses involved in maintaining a prison, as well as housing the inmates serving time there. Many of the prison facilities in the United States of America are old and outdated, with many being repaired, rather than getting funding to ensure the facility is operating safely, for staff and inmates. Further, it costs to pay for the food, water, and electricity of the inmates there, and in most cases long prison terms ensures the taxpayer will be funding the inmates and prison via their hard earned tax money. Most of the time challenges there are challenges to prion budgets, and things such as infrastructure, schools, and education are the focal point of state and federal programs (ojp.gov, 2014). Personnel is another issue facing correctional programs. This issue of attracting the right kinds of people to work in corrections and motivating them to remain once they are employed (Clear et al., 2017, p. 335). Staff retention continues to be an ongoing concern in the field of corrections. Arguably, corrections is the most dangerous sector of the criminal justice system (ojp.gov, 2014). Corrections personnel are required to guard and work at a secure facility with individuals who are constantly looking for ways to harm others. This environment is very stressful, and oftentimes, the turnover rates for correctional officers is high, leaving individuals less qualified and trained to work in such an environment. Retention of well trained, goal focused correctional officers is one of the most challenging aspects of working in the correctional field. This also lowers the ratio of correctional officers to inmates. This dilemma creates more issues, and raises concerns, due to the volatility of relationships between inmates and officers, and places many officers in undue risk associated with the prison population. Finally, the United States has one of the highest prison populations in the world, and these issues will continue to escalate, unless there's some type of prison reform, or legislation to change existing laws, which could deter, limit, and address the high number of people serving time. Without reform, the population of most facilities will maintain or increase, which costs taxpayers money to care for inmates serving time. Also, the facilities will continue to age, as revenue for prison upgrades are placed low, and the funding never reaches the intended facilities. Whether it is widely recognized or not, our society depends upon correctional employees and administrators to keep deviant individuals securely out of our communities until they are deemed ready to return ( ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, 2016). Discussion 5 (MV) Discuss why the correctional system in the United States has grown so much. What are the pros and cons of this growth? Provide current examples, and cite your sources in APA format. Many prisoners are being taken to jail and staying in those prisons for far too long without a legitimate justification for their imprisonment in the United States justice system. Furthermore, the drug epidemic has led to the expansion of the justice system. Indeed, the war on drugs has punished people for marijuana abuse and drug trafficking, and jails are overflowing with drug-related offences. Many of these reforms have resulted in a significant reduction in the number of people incarcerated in the United States. Pros: 1. As the justice infrastructure expands, criminality decreases as more offenders are imprisoned. In the United States, for example, cocaine trade has declined. 2. The expansion of the justice system has had a deterrent effect on the public, causing them to refrain from committing offences. Apprehending terrorist suspects and keeping them for an extended period of time, for example, leaves others fearful of carrying out their intended terrorist attacks. Cons; 1. The expansion of the penal facility has resulted in financial constraints for operating the prisons. As a result, the prisoners are receiving substandard treatment. 2. In the United States, reoffending rates are high due to a lack of money dedicated to educating criminal prisoners as the prison population grows. Because of the overcrowding in jails, the justice system is forced to expel inmates who have not been reformed.
