In reading A Novel Approach to Politics (Van Belle textbook) you have been introduced to the idea of using fiction to explore concepts within political science and to demonstrate the nuances of a political phenomenon, event, institution, or individual. You have seen countless examples of this fiction and politics method, now it is your turn to produce an example of your own. Using your understanding of a class concept, you will write a paper that engages in the creative and critical analysis of connecting a course concept (and related concepts) to a piece of popular media (e.g. a movie, a song, TV show/episode, a book, etc.). That is, you will pick a popular (seemingly apolitical) item/piece of media, and analyze it from a political perspective. Be creative! For example, this could be a paper titled: • • • • Kapital & the Kardashians The Anarchist Themes of Yeezus Peer Policing on Sesame Street Batman & the Panopticon The paper should be 3-4 pages in length (12-point font, Times New Roman or Garamond, 1 in. margins, double-spaced). Your bibliography, footnotes, tables, figures, pictures, or appendices do NOT count towards the page-length requirement. Late papers will be penalized 5% per day late; please consult the detailed rubric (below). You will submit the paper as Word or OpenOffice doc to UniCheck on Canvas (emailed copies are NOT accepted). Plagiarism and cheating will result in a loss of credit and all cases will be referred to the Student Affairs. Beyond the use of the course textbook you will be looking to the social science and humanities journals and databases (e.g. JSTOR) for scholarly journal articles and books that elaborate on the core concept(s) you use within your analysis of the media you select. Your conclusions and implications must be drawn from the evidence with proper citation. In terms of sources, you may use any of the following. Strong papers will make use of more than one type of source, including both popular and academic resources, including: - Scholarly books - Scholarly journals (e.g., Journal of Politics, Social Science Quarterly) - Policy journals (e.g., California Journal, Congressional Quarterly or Governing) - Newspapers (e.g., Los Angeles Times, Sacramento Bee) - Online databases (e.g., Lexis/Nexis, New America Media) - Reports from PPIC and the RAND Corporation - Demographic and survey data (e.g., US Census Bureau, LA Times Poll) Citations from general news magazines, feature magazines, or opinion magazines such as Newsweek, Atlantic Monthly, New Republic, and National Review are all right, except that you also need to include at least three of the other types of sources mentioned above. Wikipedia is 1 not acceptable as a citation source; you need to cite the original source that encyclopedia entries rely on. Paper outline (50 pts) should identify the: • • • • The specific film, book, song, etc. The concepts (What are they? Where are they in Van Belle’s Novel Approach?) The connection(s) you see & evidence for The plan (what do you need to research to fill out the argument/analysis?) *25 points for outline, 25 points for feedback on at least one other outline! Holistic Rubric: Thesis & Argument • Underline your thesis! • Articulate a well-reasoned and creative argument for your thesis. • How convincing is the argument? • Quality of the argument, appropriate use of evidence, and reasonableness of the conclusions Appropriate Use of the Readings • How knowledgeable is the student of the course material? (Proficient, Competent, Novice) • Your essay should be grounded in the COURSE readings (at least 3 referenced directly) • You paraphrase (and cite) by combining, connecting, and synthesizing ideas with your own o This means you do not “punch in” citations or quotations from the readings to fill space • You cite sources fully and accurately (in-text citations & bibliography), and not only for direct quotes but for all ideas that are not your own. Organization & Quality of the Writing • Your paper must be entirely motivated by the thesis. • Your paper must have a comprehensible structure (Introduction + Body + Conclusion) • Your paper should be well written. 2
