This activity will enable you to:

• Analyze the nature and conceptions of “freedom” in an era of widespread slavery and discrimination based on race (CO#2, CO#5).

After you have completed your readings for this module, read and participate in the discussion board.

Based on what you have read about freed African Americans in the antebellum period, post a response to the following:

• Do you think African Americans who were not enslaved during this period were truly free? Explain your answer.
• In what sense were free African Americans free?
