Descripción Analysis of a theme or motif (for example, the theme of unrequited love, the representation of women, the journey motif, etc

Sociology

Descripción Analysis of a theme or motif (for example, the theme of unrequited love, the representation of women, the journey motif, etc.) in ONE of the short storiespoems or dramas  that we have read in Aproximaciones.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Analyze a literary text, using the correct terminology.
  • *Investigate differing viewpoints encountered in the critical literature.
  • *Evaluate the criticism and determine whether to incorporate or reject the viewpoints encountered.
  • Use MLA citation style correctly and consistently to cite sources.

The outstanding essay:

  1. Is a minimum of five complete pages, plus the bibliography. Points will be deducted for shorter essays.
  2. Has a relevant bibliography, with at least three works cited in addition to the story/poem/drama/essay analyzed. Information from the Internet will not be accepted unless it is an article from JSTOR or Project Muse, from a journal designated as “peer reviewed.” Sources should not be older than five years, unless it is an older article of great significance to the topic (such as a key literary theory). NOTE: It is essential to begin your research as soon as possible.
  3. Contains a clear, well-defined, and ORIGINAL thesis statement. This is the main idea that you will develop and support in your essay. The articles and books are not the focus of the essay, but rather should be used to support or contradict your own ideas. The focus is your own original analysis of the work. The essay should not be a collection of quotes!
  4. Does not contain irrelevant information with regard to the theme of the work analyzed. For example, it is not necessary to talk about the life of the author, the literary movement to which s/he pertains or his/her literary work in general terms if this information is not directly connected to the theme.
  5. Does not focus too much on the plot or descriptions of the work. It only explains what is relevant for your analysis.
  6. Contains an introduction in which you explain clearly what you are going to talk about in your essay.
  7. Has a conclusion that does not just reiterate the key points of the essay, but also connects them to show how, together, they are significant with regard to the work analyzed. Also, one can allude to important questions related to topics that were not addressed in your essay due to lack of space, etc.
  8. Cites the texts correctly in accordance with current MLA (Modern Language Association) style.
  9. Contains transitions between paragraphs and sections, and each paragraph begins with a sentence that explains the main idea of the paragraph.
