Speech of Presentation Speech of Presentation 1. Good morning, everyone. My name is Joy Okimoto, and it is my honor as Chair of the Selection Committee, to present this year’s Engineer of the Year award to Eduardo Kho. 2. This award goes to the most exemplary engineering student here at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Over this past year, the student must have demonstrated problemsolving, critical thinking, and effective communication skills in their academic endeavors, as these are all skills that are necessary for engineers today. In addition, the student is a member of the University of Hawaii family, and they should relate and get along well with their fellow students. 3. The other nominees – Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and Albert Einstein, to name a few – all are very deserving of this award. I would like to recognize their achievements over this past year, and their hard work and dedication to their academics and their school are very much appreciated. 4. However, Eduardo Kho stood out among the rest. He has been chosen for the Engineer of the Year award because of his outstanding accomplishments over this past year. His work includes pursuing several innovative research projects and presenting his results to his professors. Eduardo Kho also assisted his professors in the role of a teacher’s assistant for several engineering classes. As a teacher’s assistant, he graded his students’ work and answered their questions while conducting their sections. Outside of class hours, he would also hold extended office hours to help his students with their homework, projects, and test preparation. Eduardo Kho did all of this while also maintaining a high gradepoint average for his own classes. Please help me to welcome our Engineer of the Year, Eduardo Kho! PRESENTATION AND ACCEPTANCE SPEECH CRITERIA Student Learner Outcome: 2. Research and organize supporting materials for various types of public presentations Module Learner Outcome: 2. Organize a P/A speech 3. Apply delivery techniques to give an effective speech 6. Create and deliver a P/A speech Speeches of presentation are given when someone is given some form of public recognition (e.g., a gift, an award, etc.). The main purpose of a speech of presentation is to tell the audience why the recipient is receiving the award. Speeches of acceptance are given when someone accepts some form of public recognition. The main purpose of a speech of acceptance is to give thanks for the award. Overview/Topic You will choose a partner for this speech. You will also decide which type of speech you will prepare and deliver (i.e., speech of presentation OR speech of acceptance). Partner A will design a speech presenting Partner B with an award and Partner B will design a speech giving thanks for the award. As a team, you will decide what award is given and received. Although this requires some teamwork in the beginning, each person will be graded INDIVIDUALLY. Once you know your partner, your type of speech, and the award, you will prepare and deliver a 1-2 minute presentation designed to achieve your goal. You must do the following during your speech: Partner A – Speech of Presentation: 1.   Identify the recipient and the award 2.   Explain the purpose of the award 3.   Praise other nominees 4.   Acknowledge the achievements of the recipient (i.e., explain why the recipient is receiving the award) Partner B – Speech of Acceptance: 1.   Give thanks for the award 2.   Recognize those who helped you along the way (relevant to the award) 3.   Recognize other nominees 4.   Explain briefly what the award means to you Delivery/Notes The presentation/acceptance speech as with all others, should be delivered extemporaneously (prepared and practiced but not memorized or read). Use only a speaking/delivery outline to jog your memory (4 x 6 index card). Do not write out whole sections (or the entire presentation) to use in your delivery. Again, do not read or recite your presentation. It should be obvious that you have practiced. Your delivery should include professional language, and a smooth voice free from fillers. You should also make meaningful eye contact and engage your audience. You must practice your speech to ensure that your delivery falls within the 1-2 minute time frame. You will have points deducted if your speech delivery falls outside of this time limit. Specifically, five points will be deducted for each 30-second interval where you fall over/under the time allotted (e.g., a speech of 45 seconds will have five points deducted or a speech of 2 minutes, 5 seconds will have five points deducted). In addition, your lab instructor will gently ask you to stop if you go over two minutes. Sources You are not required to utilize sources for this presentation. However, if you do use someone else’s information, you must identify each source when you deliver your presentation. Speaking Day Your P/A speech videos will be due on the last day of class (specified on Laulima checklist) Outline Your outline should be at least one-page in length double spaced. I am beyond grateful to be selected as a Sergeant of the United States Marines. I would also like to thank my Battalion for arranging this special ceremony and presenting me the rank of Sergeant. I want to thank the lord above because without him I would not be able to reach this achievement. The Lord continuously gives me the strength and the knowledge that I need for my everyday life. I would also like to thank my family for supporting me for doing what I love to do and always motivating me to do better. Thank you to my mom and dad, for your endless love and care for me.
