USER-CENTERED DESIGN PROJECT The final project will be done in assigned GROUPS of 4

Computer Science

USER-CENTERED DESIGN PROJECT
The final project will be done in assigned GROUPS of 4.
The project will be to design an App with a main page and at least two extra panels or
pages. If the app needs more than two extra panels or pages then make them.
The theme for the App is one of the following:
« THE OLYMPICS
» Maybe a schedule app
2 Maybe a map app
> Maybe an app for a specific type of athelete
» Maybe an app for coaching
> ete.
e VIRTUAL REALITY
> Maybe a VR menu system
> Maybe a VR game
2 Interface for moving around in a VR world
> AVR Tool
> etc.
The PARTS are as follows:

FINAL PROJECT - APP
The final project will be made up of five Project Assignments totalling 60%
PROJECT ASSIGNMENT 1 - PROJECT DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTS (5%)
The project will be to Make an App. If there is a theme – relate the app to the theme.
Project is to be done in groups assigned in class.
For the first part of the Final Project we will introduce the project with the following sections:
1. PROJECT OVERVIEW - a paragraph summarizing the project. "We are making..."
2. RATIONALE - a paragraph or two stating why this project is needed by a user and society.
3. STAKEHOLDERS - list who the application is for - the target market but also partners.
4. ASSUMPTIONS - list technological assumptions and limitations of the project scope.
5. MARKET - a couple paragraphs listing current applications that are similar to your project.
This should only be a page or two at most double spaced.
The purpose of this is to be clear about your project - not to sell your project. You are looking
for information that will guide you when making your interface.
Each section will be graded out of 10 (please proof-read for grammar and spelling).
Please submit a Word document (or the equivalent) to Slate - one person submitting to the
drop box is fine as the marks will go to the group.

PROJECT ASSIGNMENT 2 - USER REQUIREMENTS (10%)
1. SURVEY: Create a survey to find out what the users need with respect to your project.
This can be done on paper or via an online survey tool - end results must be in digital form.
A. The survey should have likert-scale questions for 5-10 features of your project.
Example: Please circle below: Q1. We should include a custom background picture.
1. strongly agree 2. agree 3. neutral 4. disagree 5. strongly disagree
B. The survey should also have at least 2 open-ended questions - one to comment on the
proposed listed features and one to ask for features that you may not have considered.
2. RESULTS: Collect at least 10 survey responses (other students, parents, friends).
3. ANALYSIS: Tabulate and analyse the results of the survey:
A. Rank your features by importance based on the survey results.
B. Outline any features that were dropped and any features that were added.
C. List your final set of features categorized into HIGH, MEDIUM and LOW priority.
4. USER SCENARIO: Create a user scenario for a "typical user":
A. Include background information of the user (make up age, gender, education).
B. Include a picture of the user.
C. Identify a minimum of five user needs and express them as goals.
D. Write an interaction scenario - what will the user do to reach their goals.
This should be one or two pages double spaced and act as a reminder as you design interface.
5. CONCLUSION: Three or four paragraphs of what you learned from this assignment.
Each section will be graded out of 10 (please proof-read for grammar and spelling).
Please submit a Word document (or the equivalent) to Slate - one person submitting to the
drop box is fine as the marks will go to the group.

PROJECT ASSIGNMENT 3 - INITIAL WIREFRAMES AND INTERACTION DESIGN (10%)
Remember your organization skills from the Information Architecture module. Show
important things first and group like features. Remember the other design principles from the
Interface Design Principles module - simplicity, clarity and consistency (including alignment).
Please create and deliver the following:
1. SKETCHED MAIN WIREFRAME DIAGRAM: A single page showing the main application
screen. Include interface and content labels and arrows to secondary states, pages or panels.
Also include any small text statements of clarification for non-obvious interactions.
2. SKETCHED SECONDARY WIREFRAME DIAGRAM: A page showing at least 2 secondary
states, pages or panels. (If there are more than 2 secondary states or pages then these must
be shown too! If they are all the same then say so). Can be on same page as the first section
if they fit. Also include any small text statements of clarification for non-obvious interactions.
3. DIGITAL MAIN WIREFRAME DIAGRAM: A single page showing the main application screen.
Include interface and content labels and arrows to secondary states, pages or panels.
Also include any small text statements of clarification for non-obvious interactions.
4. DIGITAL SECONDARY WIREFRAME DIAGRAM: A page showing at least 2 secondary states,
pages or panels. (If there are more than 2 secondary states or pages then these must be
shown too! If they are all the same then say so). Can be on same page as the first section if
they fit. Also include any small text statements of clarification for non-obvious interactions.
5. CONCLUSION: Three or four paragraphs of what you learned from this assignment.
Each section will be graded out of 10 (please proof-read for grammar and spelling).
Please submit Word doc, PDF, PowerPoint, etc. to Slate with your partner's name. Please ZIP
the files. One person submitting to the drop box is fine.

PROJECT ASSIGNMENT 4 - USER FEEDBACK / TESTING (15%)
Conduct Usability Testing at least four separate times (two times in class and two times
outside of class on someone other than your class mates) and provide the following:
1. PREPARATION: Provide a sample of your "script" including introduction to make the user
feel at home (biscuits), the goal or goals that you tell the user, and the tasks that you expect
the user to accomplish but keep secret.
2. RESULTS: The results of the testing including Likert Scale results, observations about user
actions and expectations, verbal feedback from the user, and answers to open ended
questions.
3. CONCLUSION: 1. What you learned about your wireframes and steps to improve. 2. What
you learned about your application and steps to improve. 3. What you learned about Usability
Testing.
Each section will be graded out of 10 (please proof-read for grammar and spelling).
Please submit Word doc, PDF, PowerPoint, etc. to Slate with your partner's name. Please ZIP
the files.

PROJECT ASSIGNMENT 5 - REVISED WIREFRAMES (5%)
Keep a copy of your original wireframes and submit them with this assignment.
Based on your Usability Testing, please revise your digital wireframes to fix deficiencies and
make things more simple, clear, consistent and organized.
Please provide the following:
1. WIREFRAME DIAGRAMS: A copy of your original Wireframe Diagrams and your NEW
Wireframe Diagrams. So two sets with your new diagrams labelled NEW.
2. SUMMARY OF WIREFRAME CHANGES: A paragraph or two of what changes you made, if
any, to your wireframing technique. Arrow heads, better alignment, neater writing, etc.
3. SUMMARY OF APPLICATION CHANGES: A couple paragraphs pointing out what changes
you made to the content of your wireframe - labels, button names, location of items, etc.
Each section will be graded out of 10 (please proof-read for grammar and spelling).
Please submit Word doc, PDF, PowerPoint, etc. to Slate with your partner's name. Please ZIP
the files.

user surveys, user testing and revised wireframing. We will also prepare a presentation as
outlined at the end of this document. Please provide:
1. PROJECT SUMMARY - a couple paragraphs summarizing what you are making and why - in
other words, a summary of the Project Assignment 1.
2. LEARNINGS - go over the lessons in Interactive User Interface Design how modules 2, 3, 4,
5 & 6 relate to your project - ONE sentence each module.
3. CONCLUSION - 1. summarize changes that were made to your design as you progressed
