The Organizational Analysis Power-point is a major assignment in this course and is due during Week 4 of the course. This assignment is worth 20% of your total grade. Although not due until Week 4, this assignment is being introduced during Week 1 to help you prepare to meet the requirements.  

You will interview a Senior Nursing Leader and a Organizational Leader such as Human Resources Director or Quality/Risk Management Director (non - nursing leader) as well as perform an analysis of the Healthcare Organization that will include:

A. Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan - 10 points

  • Identify and briefly describe a health care organization for analysis.
  • Define Mission and Vision of the Organization.
  • Identify the top 3-5 Key Focus Areas of the Strategic Plan. Alternate Top 5 goals as identified by Senior Nurse Leader.

 

 

B. Leadership and Management Style and Management of the Mission through the Strategic Plan - 20 points

  • List top leadership and direct reports. An org chart may be added as an addendum to clearly identify reporting relationships.
  • Interview the Senior Nurse Leader of the Organization. Briefly describe the leadership style and professional mission. 
  • Provide an exemplar of the Senior Nurse Leader's leadership style in managing direct reports. 
  • Discuss the management tactics used by the Senior Nurse Leader to motivate and manage staff in achieving goals related to Strategic Plan and provide an exemplar. 
  • Interview and identify how the Organizational Leader (non-nursing) supports the Nursing Key Focus Areas or Strategies

 

 

 

C. Communication - 20 points

  • Identify preferred method of communication with direct reports and the person to whom the Senior Nurse Leader reports too.   
  • Discuss challenges to communication in times of disaster management - in particular - with COVID 19 pandemic. 
  • How did the Senior Nurse Leader adapt, compensate, innovate to meet the needs of the situation, staff and patients.
  • Describe types of communication - tools and strategies used in the organization both formal and informal.
  • Provide methods and strategies used to resolve conflict. 
  • Provide an exemplars.   
 

D. Motivation and Reward - 20 points

  • Briefly describe standard recognition and reward systems in place by the Healthcare Organization. 
  • Describe how staffing plans are being adapted during times of disaster management - specifically with COVID 19. How are staff being recognized and rewarded? 
  • Provide exemplars. 
 

E. Conduct a SWOT Analysis - Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats of the Senior Nurse - 20 points

  • Conduct a SWOT Analysis - Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats of the Senior Nurse Leader. Provide exemplars.
  • Analyze whether you think the organization is meeting mission/vision.
  • Provide an example, an exemplar of an improvement that you recommend.

  • Create a one page concise white paper for further discussion to support your Powerpoint Presentation.
 

As a Nurse Executive you will be asked to make formal presentations therefore we want to provide you with an opportunity to utilize Power-point during this course, so this assignment will be submitted in a Power-point format.  You will also create a one page concise white paper for further discussion to support your Powerpoint Presentation. You may choose a healthcare organization in which you have no affiliation or the
organization in which you currently work. As a graded application exercise for graduate
work - It is vital that the time you apply to this project is not paid-time through your
employer.

Organizational Analysis Power-point Template. With this template, it provides an overview of the content that you should include in each slide. Of course we will want you to add your content, pictures, creativity etc. 

Also below are some samples of previous Power-point presentations completed by Dr Plonien and another by a former student in this program and now Clinical Faculty. You will note that these Power-point presentations are not related to the Organizational Analysis but rather some samples of other presentations.

Also attached is a short video - Death by Power-point - that is optional viewing (can be counted on your practicum log) that also provides some helpful hints in developing a Powerpoint presentation.
