On the 31st of May 2021, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the Delta COVID-19 variant as a major health concern. This resulted in many nations continuing to exercise caution and put lockdowns in place to minimise its spread and to avoid public health catastrophes. This has had negative consequences on economic activity and may have affected adversely global stock markets. However, investors still make equity investments when markets are facing adverse conditions.
This assessment aims at:
measures
Task 1
Your Facilitator will allocate to you a pair of companies (see Appendix); one which is part of the ASX100, an Australian stock market index and the other belonging to the FTSE100, the index representing the top 100 companies by market capitalisation on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). You should download daily (Adjusted Closing) stock prices from yahoo finance from 31 May 2021 to 28 February 2022. For each company, calculate daily stock returns; arithmetic mean of daily returns, geometric mean of daily returns, and the holding period return (HPR). (10 marks)
Calculate and identify which one of the stocks of the two companies is riskier than the other using beta and standard deviation as risk metrics. (10 marks)
Using geometric mean return information and the standard deviation metrics calculated above, which company would you invest in if you were a risk-averse investor? Justify your choice. (7.5 marks)
Perform a comparative analysis of how the companies’ industries have been affected by the advent
of COVID-19. (7.5 marks)
