NU 530 Unit 7 Discussion – Effective Communication

Communication is essential to everyone's daily existence. Even if you're unable to communicate vocally, there are other methods. Telephone lines and other forms of technology, such as paper and computer-aided systems, are examples of communication. Nonverbal, written, and gestured forms are examples of many communication modes. It's important to remember that communication is at the core of our society and all we do. It's essential to everything we do, from school to job to play. Health care is a place where patients/clients might feel vulnerable, alone, and afraid. Health care team members depend on strong communication to provide safe, coordinated, and effective treatment (Hitt, Miller & Colella, 2015). For a successful communicator to guarantee that their message is encoded correctly to avoid misinterpretation by the receiver, they must first understand their audience(s).

It is possible to communicate, but this does not guarantee that the communication will be successful. Success in communication is achieved when the intended message is received and understood by the recipient (Nordquist, 2019). One of our younger patients just came into my care, and I spent some time attempting to come up with a plan for her to safely depart our unit after she had been there for many weeks. I addressed the situation with my charge nurse, and we both provided the facts of what we had learned about the patient from taking care of her and dealing with her family regularly. Doctors concluded that she was a person with a mental health condition, which I found absurd. Before undergoing a standard operation, the patient posed as a typical young lady. She is now unable to function as an adult.

For the time being, the patient's case has not been resolved, and their condition is unresolved. To get answers to my questions, I approached the charge nurse using a skepticism-inducing tone of voice. When she answered my queries, I developed a philosophical argument to counter her answer since it didn't make sense. When I couldn't come up with a solution on my own, I had to brainstorm with someone else. When trying to figure out how to bring her home and the best discharge plan, I used a method that worked well for me since I could see so many different possibilities. I couldn't grasp the treatment plan until I figured out what had transpired. Critical thinking may be improved by asking questions and challenging oneself, which I feel is a terrific way to unearth hidden information. Poor communication is one of my biggest pet peeves. If I don't say what I'm thinking aloud, I'm afraid I'll forget it. When listening, I attempt to maintain my thoughts rather than pay attention to what others are saying. My professional and personal lives are continually devoted to this goal. I am certain that this will improve my ability to pay attention and comprehend what is being spoken to me.
