ASSIGNMENT #1

PSYC 2002

Due March 2nd, 2022

Marked out of 50 and worth 10% of your final Grade

Instructions:

  • Complete all answers.
  • If the question says to follow all the “steps”, then it is expected that you will complete all the steps taught to you in hypothesis testing for that particular statistical test you decide to perform. Marks are allocated for each step. Do not skip any.
  • Show all your work.
  • If you select the wrong test the question will be marked incorrect.
  • If you select the correct test, then make a mathematical error, you will lose part marks.
  • It is imperative that your conclusions follow the format taught in class. If mathematical errors result in an incorrect conclusion, this is considered a serious error in statistics and therefore marks will be deducted.
  • Once you have completed your assignment, PDF it, save it as Assignment 1_firstlastname and upload it to the assignment drop box found on CuLearn.
  • Late penalties are 25% per day. No exceptions! Assignments submitted 4 days past the due date will not be graded (March 5th)
  • Assignments must be accompanied with a signed “plagiarism” form. Failure to do so will result in your assignment not being graded.
  • You may handwrite or type the assignment.
  • Please submit the questions in order.

QUESTION #1: (23 marks)

A researcher who studies mental health is interested in the length of time (in days) that a patient stays in the hospital after they have presented to emergency having suicidal ideation. The researcher follows the first 30 patients during the month of January and follows them until each one of them is released. Below is the histogram of the data obtained from the 30 patients.

SECTION I: Using the data from this histogram, a. Construct a frequency table (4 marks)

  1. Calculate all measures of central tendency (3 marks)
  2. Calculate all measures of variability (4 marks)
  3. What is the shape of this distribution? (1 mark)
  4. Given the shape and type of data, which measure of central tendency would you be more likely to report? Why? (3 marks)

SECTION II: Using the standard normal curve, and the data obtained in Section I, answer the following questions:

  1. Is a patient that stayed X = 10 days considered as being an extreme or typical length of stay?

(show all your data analysis and justify your response in one sentence) (2 marks)

What percentage of the patients stayed longer than this? (1 mark)

What percentage of the patients stayed less than this? (1 mark)

  1. Is a patient that stayed X = 17 days considered as being an extreme or typical length of stay?

(Justify your response in one sentence) (2 marks)

What percentage of the patients stayed longer than this? (1 mark)

What percentage of the patients stayed less than this? (1 mark)

QUESTION #2

(12 marks)

Childhood maltreatment is thought to be linked to adult narcissistic traits. In particular, it is thought that the more severe the childhood maltreatment, the more a person would suffer from the vulnerable form of narcissism. Individuals with this type of personality disorder display attention seeking behaviors, lack empathy, are resentful, have an inferiority complex, and view criticism as a personal attack. As a result, these individuals can be very resentful and vindictive towards others.  A research clinician has a sample of n=20 patients who have suffered extreme childhood maltreatment and agree to be assessed on a well-known interval scale for vulnerable narcissism. For the general population, scores on the vulnerable narcissism scale are normally distributed with a µ = 25 and s=4. The sample of patients score an average of M=29

Can the research clinician conclude that the sample of patients who have experienced childhood maltreatment score significantly higher in vulnerable narcissism that the general population?  (test at alpha = .05 and show all of the steps of hypothesis testing)

QUESTION #3

(15 marks)

Theorists have suggested that there may be a link between childhood trauma and involvement in the criminal justice system. These theorists think that rehabilitation for youth involved in the criminal justice system would be more effective if it targeted individual traumas in addition to known criminal risk factors. A researcher that works at one of the institutions for youth decided to test this theory choosing n=30 youth who were incarcerated and administered a questionnaire assessing their history of traumatic events. The researcher knew that youth in the general population tend to score on average a µ = 5 (the s is not known) on the interval scale measuring trauma. The researcher is unsure whether this group of offenders will score higher or lower and after administering the scale found the mean to be M = 7 and with a variance of s2 = 4. Conduct all of the steps of hypothesis testing using an alpha = .05
