4-1 Discussion: Technology in the Media

Review the module resources and overview, and select a popular-culture example (television show, commercial, game, movie, etc.). Analyze how technology is represented and the social message conveyed by the example. In your initial post, briefly describe the popular-culture example you selected and address the following:

  • How does your example portray or reflect technology?
  • What is the social message or commentary about technology reflected by your example?
  • How does a study of technology illuminate or enhance your experience of the example?

In responding to your peers, provide feedback about the example utilized and the message/commentary about technology being provided. What would you add to their analysis?

Make sure you support your post and responses by referencing the module resources, and any additional sources as needed.

I feel the TV series "Black Mirror" is a good example that can help illustrate the impact of technology on society. It is a satirical show showing how technological devices can affect our lives if their use is uncontrolled (Singh, 2014). The machines can dehumanize the viewers in the long run if used for a long time. The social commentary tries to reflect on possible future consequences of the increased use of technology. Therefore, I believe that the show attempts to enlighten users of the dark side of technology. Another social meaning of the show is that when turned off, the devices' screen becomes mirrors to see the reality about ourselves (Singh, 2014).

Moreover, the film insinuates that technology is not the issue but humans who are technology users. Although technology cannot solve all the cultural problems, it can resolve those within a specific cultural artifact. One way of solving the issues is by providing knowledge of using various technology tools to analyze and act upon the subject. Technological media can help problems surrounding the use of social media. The link to the development is https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/09/210915134602.htm.
