3-1 Discussion: Technology in History

Over the past two weeks, our readings and discussions have been focused on establishing a baseline for understanding technology. This week, we begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the issue, not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So looking through the historical lens isn't just about History Channel documentaries, but about how you use this lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions:

  • In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of the role of technology in society?
  • Consider a current event regarding technology in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? Please share a news link to your events.
  • How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and technology have an influence on your discipline of study or chosen profession?

Respond to at least two of your classmates. Compare and contrast your answers to further everyone's understanding of technology and the lens of history.

Make sure you support your response with the readings from this module, and any addition resources as needed.

Understanding the role of technology from a historical point of view is quite interesting. The history lens involves looking at past events. For instance, every human being remains unique due to its DNA composition. In history, Alec Jeffrey, a molecular biologist, developed an analysis of human DNA in 1984 (Neumann & Stern, 2016). Even in the current years, the DNA fingerprints method remains common in the criminal justice system, particularly in courts. The technique helps determine if the accused is the true culprit through reliable individual identity. The method can change past mistakes in the criminal courts. For instance, it can help free a person wrongly convicted, prevent false arrests, and provide answers to mysterious crimes. For example, Horace Roberts was wrongly accused and convicted in 1998 of killing his ex-girlfriend. Through the DNA fingerprint technique, the man was found not guilty (Garcia, 2018). The method allows a revisit of history to collect data and find the truth helping the victim regain freedom. Analyzing the relationship between history and technology helps provide justice to both the plaintiff and defendant. An individual gets rightly accused, and the plaintiff receives the justice he deserves.
