Discussion Board Question:

Describe some potential harm that employees could experience as the result of participating in organizational research. How might a researcher mitigate these risks?

My response to question:

Employees could face psychological or financial harm if they provide negative information about management or other employees during an interview or survey. Managers are in a position to retaliate through poor career assessments that prevent the employee from advancing in their careers. The employee could also be fired under pretenses, causing financial harm. If negative information about employees is provided during data collection, the employee could face difficulties in work activities that require collaboration with peers. This would result in an unsupportive work environment, negatively affecting the employee’s psychological wellbeing. Researchers should consider all potential forms of harm to the participants – whether physical, emotional, psychological, or financial – as part of the ethical considerations (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). They should also formulate means to avoid such outcomes and abandon the project if participants are not sufficiently protected. Important protection is ensuring participant anonymity by refraining from collecting any identifying information. Researchers should also store all data collected in password-protected files and the case of physical files, in locked cabinets. The data should be destroyed within a specified period to prevent it from coming into the wrong person’s hands. Participants should also be informed of their right to withdraw from a study and withdraw any data they provided before it is published.

Respond to the next question from the instructor regarding my response to the discussion board question. Respond in 30 words or less.

1.            If the participants are fully informed and agree to participate in research, is the researcher's liability negated in the event harm occurs?

The above discussion board question is what my colleagues are responding to.

There are a number of risks that employees can experience as a result an organizational research project:

Psychological - stressors could be caused from pain or discomfort of the testing methods.

•             Mitigation technique, ensure every subject matter is aware of the testing types, suspected pain levels, etc knows that they can stop the testing at any time

Physical  - risks include anxiety, depression, guilt, shock and loss of self-esteem and altered behavior.

•             Physical risks can be managed by taking a survey before-hand that outlines the subjects physical ailmaints and will allow for a participant to state triggers and limit the amount of people that score high due to luck.

Economic - risks include utilizing disadvantaged subects and the research may embarras them.

Loss of confidentiality - Keeping client confidentialy is super important and can be didfficult to do

•             Personal information can be stolen at any time, to mitigate this risk, SunCoast should have the process to obtain data storage mechinsm and ensure things like social security number...etc, should be protected via storage containement methods.

Legal - When methods used that could lead to violating the law or giving out false information.  Suncoast should not request any subject perform illegal activites.

Some potential harm that employees could experience is retaliation for supervisors or human resources. This could include loss of wages, work hours, verbal harassment, and much more. There are also harsher risks, such as physical risks like pain or injury and psychological risks like anxiety.

Risks can be minimized by using procedures consistent with sound research design and not unnecessarily exposing employees to risk
