Planning and Organizing Functions in Health Care Management

Health care organizations are complex and dynamic; hence they require a good management team that will provide quality leadership to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. A healthcare manager must perform well his roles in planning and organizing to be successful. The planning function requires the manager to give direction, set objectives, and determine what action to take to achieve the objectives. In addition, planning involves coming up with strategies, tactics, and how to operate various duties by delegating responsibilities to other employees (Thompson et al., 2018).

Health care managers must also perform organizing functions to be successful. Organizing functions involve the overall design and structure of the organization, whereby the manager is responsible for allocating human resources (Thompson et al., 2018). The health care manager should determine individual responsibilities and departments to ensure coordination to achieve the objectives as a team.

I am confident of my abilities in this area because I have the necessary skills that will help me perform the roles of a health care manager. I have conceptual and interpersonal skills that enable me to critically analyze problems and make effective decisions that solve complex problems (Thompson et al., 2018). I can also communicate well with other individuals and implement programs to ensure a smooth run of activities.

Impact of Internal and External Standards

Internal and external standards are essential in tracking outcomes and improving quality and safety in health care facilities. Internal standards are the internal factors involved in the working environment of the health care organization. They include; resources, organization structure, organization culture, and management. External standards are the external factors that surround the organization, and they can affect their performance and quality of health services, i.e., community, political stability, and legal policies.

Internal and external standards positively impact health care organizations by improving the quality and services. Availability of resources will increase demand for health care services as there will be enough amenities to provide services to the patients. Good management will create good relationships between the employees and the patients. This will ensure employee loyalty; thus, they will provide quality care provided to the patient’s satisfaction. External factors impact health care organizations such that community members can visit patients and offer voluntary services to the healthcare facility. Political stability will allow the organization to perform its activities smoothly, thus provide quality health care services (Mosadeghrad, 2014).

Role of Continuous Improvement in Quality and Safety

Continuous improvement in quality and safety refers to a systematic and sustainable approach to enhancing the measurable quality of care and performance outcomes for patients. Health care leaders must ensure continuous improvement in quality and safety by carrying out certain activities. They can monitor and compare performances by evaluating their implementations and improving where necessary. Training new and experienced employees will ensure continuous quality improvement since they will acquire and learn new skills, thus developing workforce capabilities required for quality service provision (Singer et al., 2015).

Continuous improvement in quality and safety is essential as it helps the organization achieve its goals and objectives. In addition, it enhances patient experiences and positive outcomes, thus building a good reputation for the health care organization. Continuous improvement also ensures no medical errors that may result from faulty systems and processes that may cause harm to the patients. Lastly, continuous improvement provides efficiency and effectiveness of the health care activities and processes, thus reducing the capital cost of care while ensuring quality performance (Taylor & Meyers, 2020). Therefore, health care managers should ensure continuous improvement of quality and safety to achieve their goals and objectives.

Plan for employee development in quality and safety

A plan in quality and safety improvement refers to a detailed, overarching work plan for the organization's service quality improvement activities. A plan is a roadmap that outlines and facilitates a systematic approach to improve services and resolve the identified problems. Health care managers should involve the employees when developing program plans for quality and safety improvement (Ryan, 2011).

A plan for employee development in quality and safety improvement should define the organizational mission, vision, scope of service, and goals and objectives (Ryan, 2011). This will help employees understand the interventions to support workplace activities to improve the quality of services. In addition, the plan should define the employee roles and responsibilities whereby the employees should be assigned tasks for which they will be accountable. This will decrease the risk of making errors and disruptions during staff transitions. It will also give the individuals targets that they should attain for improvement of quality and safety.

The plan should contain an evaluation strategy to measure the employee’s performance and demonstrate the impact of implementing quality and safety improvement interventions. It is essential for health care managers to develop a good relationship with the employees. This will ensure the employees are loyal to the organization, and they will provide quality services to the patients, thus improving the quality and safety of the health care facility.

Role of technology in quality and safety

Technology and information management is an essential tool as it plays a crucial role in roves quality and safety by increasing efficiency, effectiveness and reducing costs. Apart from improving quality and safety, technology enhances the patient's safety outcomes by reducing errors and preventing adverse effects (Foisey, 2017).

Technology facilitates communication between the health officers preventing communication errors that cause misunderstanding and often lead to adverse outcomes. Technology is vital in improving medication safety by tracking and reporting through surveillance. This has helped reduce medication errors, i.e., wrong prescriptions that may cause severe complications on patients. Technology has also enabled access to information as data can quickly be accessed through databases, textbooks, and online references. This provides sufficient information that helps enhance proper treatment. Lastly, technology has increased patient’s involvement in care provision as they can access their medical records and make them knowledgeable concerning their conditions (Foisey, 2017). This encourages patient satisfaction as they can participate in decision-making.

Therefore, it's essential for health care managers to implement technology since it brings many benefits that are critical in improving quality services and ensuring patient safety.
