Is Ehrenreich, Packer, or Riesman successful in their semiotic analysis of their subjects? Is the author convincing in their claims, examples, and conclusions and how it reflects fluctuating American attitudes? What are the signs they address? Purpose: The goal of this short essay is to demonstrate your knowledge of semiotics, using concepts and vocabulary from the texts we have read so far. This essay will prepare you for conducting a semiotic analysis on a topic of your choice. ALFONSI CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION SUCCESSFUL PAPERS WILL: Introduce and explain the semiotic method (You may use the articles I have provided for you) to your readers: its steps, its purpose, and its value. To the best of your ability, clearly and accurately summarize elements of the author's argument while evaluating its strengths and/or flaws. Describe and respond to JUST ONE AUTHOR'S conclusions by agreeing, disagreeing, or doing a bit of both while explaining your response. Be organized. The paper is organized, interesting, and compelling. It is ok to mix in both academic and everyday voice. Make readers want to keep reading. The paper meets MLA and college standards for formatting, citation, and formal writing mechanics such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. The paper is 3-4 pages (or more if you wish)
