The Importance of Having Properly Funded Art Programs and The Benefits it brings to Public Schools

This article aims at creating awareness about art programs in schools and seeks to address why art programs are continually losing funding. The author, Chelsea Brown studies the benefits that art has in both the academic and public setting and in addition to this, explores the factors that affect funding for the arts. She recognizes that politics is a major factor that influences over funding of the arts, and the effect it has had over the subject, and the contrasting influence that art has on the former. Further, Brown gives a review on some research that has been conducted on art funding in schools and factors that influence funding.

Brown recognizes the benefits of arts and justifies the need for having properly funded art programs. The author provides a link of the advantages of properly funded art programs and the overall benefits that would accrue therein. I chose this article as it provides an insight into the benefits of art and art programs both in schools and in public settings. In addition to this, the article also studies the different benefits that art has and continues to have individually and as a society. The article also shows how politics influences art funding while at the same time informing on how art influences politics.

MacKenzie Scott’s multimillion-dollar message: Art is essential everywhere, not just in museums and theaters

            Sarah L. Kaufman writes about MacKenzie Scott's perspective on the importance of arts. Kaufman's article begins with Scott's donations of money that she has dedicated to art and cultural organizations, colleges, and universities. Scott, a billionaire has pledged to donate most of her money to charity. Most of the donations are given to arts and cultural centers and as Kaufman notes, with an eye on the underserved and marginalized communities. The author informs on a few organizations and centers that have been given donations and the wider plan that Scot has for the arts.

            While writing about the actions of Scott who has been donating funds to support arts, the article outlines the several benefits of funding arts. For example, the article notes that arts foster empathy, creates spaces and reflects upon the community and its identity and with this, the results are improving academic outcomes, lowering crime rates, and improved mental health. Kaufman notes that art is important especially in social settings and helps foster some greater sense of community whose benefits reflect upon many aspects of the society. This article also informs on the various forms of art, from the different dancing, talent display, acting singing art, and many others. This serves to educate the reader on the broadness of art and an appreciation of the same. I chose this article as it shows how an individual's contribution towards arts can help and benefit the field of art in both an academic and public setting.
