In this term project, you will demonstrate essential Excel skills and critical thinking approaches. Prerequisites You should be familiar with the following skills using Microsoft Excel: • • • • • Workbook and worksheet skills: open, close, save, and create Enter and manipulate data Enter formulas and functions, such as Sum, Count, Average and calculating ratios Apply formatting (e.g., color, border, print area) You should also be familiar with MS Word to create, save, and close a Word document. Case Scenario After an exciting college basketball game, you and your friends began debating which basketball team is better. Your best friend is a die-hard fan of one team. Another friend has been supporting their rival team, also an alumnus. Other friends also said their teams have been performing the best. You think that there are different ways to measure the performance, so you suggested that they all analyze which team had the best performance during the most recently completed full season. Project Requirements 1) If you are not familiar with benchmarking analysis, watch the “What is Benchmarking?” video to learn about this commonly used approach that corporations use to measure and compare performance. The video is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mY2YrYAE-U. 2) To collect data on the College Basketball Stats and History: http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/. Select a college men’s basketball team and locate their latest complete season statistics on the website. Each group member is to select a different team. 3) Working with your group members, run a benchmarking analysis to compare the performance of these teams as follows. For each team that the group members have selected: a) Collect data from the website: b) Find the statistics that represents each team's performance (not the conference performance). c) At a minimum, include the following performance indicators for each team: i) Number of games won ii) Number of games lost iii) PTS -- Total Points iv) G -- Games (i.e., number of games played during the season) v) FG% -- Field Goal Percentage (from any distance) vi) 3P% -- 3-Point Field Goal Percentage (from beyond the 3-point line) vii) TOV -- Total Turnovers d) Use Excel formulas to calculate the following key performance indicators (KPIs): i) Win-loss percentage (W-L%) = Number of games won / Total number of games played ii) Average points per game = Total Points / Total number of games played iii) Average Turnovers per Game = Total Turnovers / Total number of games played 4) Identify three additional key performance indicators (KPIs) that your group thinks as important to benchmark. These KPIs should be same for every team! 5) All these statistics should be clearly labeled and formatted in the same way for each of team. Use Excel tools such as borders, font size and type, and colors to make it easy to understand for readers of your report. 6) Enter the group number, group members’ names, and report name in the page header of the report. 7) Format your report to print on one page. 8) Save the Excel file, and the team leader uploads it to Canvas.
