Safety and Health-Related Theory and Technology to Address Environmental Issues

In the recent past, concerns have been raised about various challenges that the environment experiences due to human activities. Therefore, it is crucial that human people monitor their undertakings and take necessary measures aimed at improving the surrounding. This paper is, therefore, a discussion of safety and health theory and technology to address environmental challenges.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Technology Verification Program: Monitoring ammonia and mercury monitoring.

According to this program, Ashley, Waits, Hartzell, & Harten (2005) discuss different aspects of environmental pollution that can be curbed. In their submission, they discuss specifically how potential environmental threats posed by ammonia and mercury can be addressed. Progressively, the study explains the significance of protecting the body against the levels of mercury from various sources like water, air, landfills, etc. Besides, the researchers outline specific ways through which mercury pollution should be controlled, this beginning with the level of mercury that poses a threat to human health (Ashley et al., 2005).

This should be followed by putting in place a measuring and monitoring practice, cleaning areas contaminated by mercury, then providing clear guidelines on how to limit exposure to mercury. Also, the research outlines measures and steps that should be taken to control ammonia pollution. They suggest that ammonia gets to the atmosphere due to industrial processes (Ashley et al., 2005). Therefore, it recommends that ammonia be controlled using venture as well as cyclonic spray towers. Also, they recommend using secondary dump scribers in cases of fluorine.

An Equation for Computing Water Flow Rate from Pipe Diameter, the Application, and Variables in the Equation.

Generally, the equation for computing water flow rate from a pipe diameter is obtained by dividing the rate of flow by the product of pie and velocity. In this case, the variables will be the rate of flow and velocity, as the relationship between these two variables can help obtain the pipe’s diameter.

Flow Rate (Q) =(pi)/ 4(d)2*V

Where Q is water flow rate, d is the pipe’s diameter, and V is the velocity at which water flows in the pipe. Also, from this information, it is possible to determine the water flow rate. A pipe’s diameter is simply its cross-sectional length, and water velocity can also be measured using modern techniques.

Two Methods for Treating Water

There are several water treatment methods that can be used. Nonetheless, some methods include chlorination, flocculation, and electromagnetic radiation method. Flocculation involves using powdered ferrous sulfate as a flocculent and using calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water via a chemical water treatment process (Tanioka et al., 2019). Conversely, electromagnetic radiation uses ultraviolet (U.V.) radiations to kill pathogens and render water safe for human consumption. Two Features of a Solid Waste Landfill.

A solid waste landfill is a dumpsite in which solid waste materials are disposed of within the surrounding. Progressively, its contents include both organic, inorganic wastes and suspended substances. Also, when it rains, there is the formation of leachate when rainwater washes the waste down the landfall. When this leaches out, it results in the formation of environmentally harmful chemicals. Besides, the suspended particles are the solid particles contained in the landfall that is insoluble by environmental and weather changes (Ashley et al., 2005). These soluble and insoluble materials can sometimes be washed down or out of landfalls into the soil and water bodies resulting in pollution.

Two Hazardous Waste Onsite Remediation Technologies

Today, technology plays an integral role in the removal of harmful wastes and environmental hazards from water bodies, soil, groundwater, and even the earth’s surface. EPA suggests that there are several technologies that can be useful in remediating different risks emanating from waste locations. An example is the Testing Remediation Technology. This is employed by many industries that apply standardized testing technology for new products’ performance and associated environmental impact (Ashley et al., 2005). Also, despite concerns about its effectiveness in onsite remediation, it is one of the most reliable approaches to the safe disposal of industrial waste. Similarly, the Federal Remediation Technology is another one. This has made it possible for EPA to gather data on several public dumpsites, thus ensuring timely cleanups.

The Purpose of an Electrostatic Precipitator and the Air Pollutants Removed

An electric precipitator is a device applicable in the process of filtering by eliminating dust particles and smoke from a gas that is flowing. It uses force that originates from electrostatic charges to hamper gases’ flow via a channel. The device extracts dust particles and carbon soot from the exhaust fumes, which, if left unattended, would possibly pollute the environment. In doing so, the machine operation is in a way that it eliminates pollutants before they enter the smokestacks. The approach was effective in regulating common pollutants in the air (Tanioka et al., 2019). The efficiency of the equation is the ratio of consumed power in watts to airflow/ cubic foot every 60 seconds. The mechanical advantage of this device enables it to eliminate particles from the air stream. The equation is E=?

The Equations Used to Compute SPL in dB

The SPL or sound pressure level refers to the ratio of absolute sound pressure to the hearing threshold reference level or simply the lowest sound strength that an individual can hear at a specific time. SPL measures are expressed in terms of decibels (dB) because the intensity of hearing range credibly varies (Nnaji  & Karakhan, 2020). Thus, SPL is obtained as the fraction between the sound system’s absolute pressure and the hearing range threshold.

SPL =(90 dB)/ 1.002374467*10-11  μbar

The Favorite Part of the Course

The whole course is interesting because it focuses on crucial environmental measures that aim to make the surroundings friendlier. Nonetheless, the part that stands out is the measures and programs that Environmental Protection Agency is implementing to ensure pollution is addressed through technological innovations. In this regard, it enables me to have a deeper understanding of how environmental pollution control has been revolutionized by the application of technology. For instance, there are crucial industrial processes that result in the emission of smoke, mercury, and ammonia, among other hazardous by-products, and these cannot be avoided. However, EPA, through various initiatives, is working round the clock to ensure safe disposal measures by players in these processes. Again, it is fair to acknowledge that environmental pollutions are strongly linked to human activities, and if urgent measures are not taken, then life on earth may become unbearable. Therefore, despite EPA taking crucial steps to address the same, every individual, organization, and government must also play their part in supporting such initiatives.
