NA2 DISABILITY RIGHTS

The 504 sit-in was a protest of the disability that began in 1977 on 5th April where people with disabilities and the entire disability community in the United States went to the federal buildings. They went to the federal building to push for the issuance of the regulations that protected people living with disabilities (Osorio et al 2018). The movement was successful because the section was unanimously protested by great foundations and organizations fighting for the rights of people living with a disability such as the Paralyzed Veterans of America and The National Paraplegic Foundation(Wilfond et al 2017). The huge protests in the cities pushed President Richard Nixon to sign the bill into law with the establishment of section 504 and was later on signed into law in 1990 on July 26th by President George H.W Bush.

As a society, we have made great steps in respecting the human rights of persons with disabilities. People living with disabilities are currently given equal opportunities in the different sectors including education, job, and political representation in the different legislative houses. People living with disabilities are also given equal opportunity to take part in sports activities with a good example being in the world Olympics games and athletics. People with disabilities in sports participation in the event referred to as world Paralympic championships. In the buildings with staircases, some rams are designated to be used by physically disabled people. The people with disability especially those who have hearing and speech disabilities have not been left out in the media platform where there are interpreters on the screen who translates to them what is being aired(Abdel Haleem et al 2021). Indeed, society has moved a step ahead in embracing people with disabilities in different ways.
