STRATEGIC PLAN PROJECT • Units 5, 6, 8, and 11 • Weight 30% of the final grade Though flexibility and adaptability are often required in today’s business world, organizations still require a roadmap that encompasses the parameters against which they will make managerial decisions as well as the steps they plan to take to ensure they get from point A to point B. This assignment will ask you to develop a 3-year strategic plan for an organization with which you are affiliated. It could be your place of employment, a volunteer organization, a sports team, a religious organization, or even your child’s daycare facility. The assignment will ask you to develop your strategy in three phases: strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and strategy evaluation. Instructions This assignment is designed to expose you to the complexity of a strategic plan and the measures required for properly implementing and evaluating a plan. It will allow you to • expand your knowledge of strategic planning within an organization, • develop your ability to use strategic planning tools, • contribute to your ability to assess the strategic directions and plans for an organization with which you are affiliated, and • create a fully implementable strategic plan. The assignment will be submitted in four parts throughout the semester. The staged approach is designed to allow you to submit drafts of the three main areas of the project so that early feedback can be incorporated into your final project submission at the end of the course. Late Submission Policy • This assignment is subject to the Late Submission penalty policy, namely 5% per day for three days. • This page will close and will not allow further submissions after this Late Submission period has expired. • In the event of an emergency situation preventing you from submitting within this time frame, special permission must be obtained from your instructor. Documentation substantiating emergency is required. In such a circumstance, if the extension is granted, the professor will reopen the submission function for you on an individual basis. • Please do not email your submissions to your professor, either before or after the due date; all coursework should be submitted through the online course (Moodle). Phase 1: Strategy Formulation Draft • Due no later than 11:00 p.m. on Sunday of Unit 5 • Weight 5% of the final grade Instructions Prepare a draft document for review by your professor that includes the following: • an analysis of current vision/mission and proposal for updated vision/mission, • external Factor Evaluation Matrix and Porter’s 5-Forces Analysis, • Internal Factor Evaluation Matrix, • SWOT Matrix, • CG Matrix, and • Strategic direction choice and rationalization: choose one (or two) of the strategic directions as defined in Chapter 5 that you feel will be best for your organization to pursue in the coming 3 years, and develop a rationalization for this choice. Ensure that the choice is driven by the matrices developed above. Phase 2: Strategy Implementation Draft • Due no later than 11:00 p.m. on Sunday of Unit 6 • Weight 5% of the final grade Instructions Prepare a draft document for review by your professor that includes the following: • A set of measurable objectives for the next three years (i.e., specific things that the organization can do to successfully implement strategy), • an organizational chart that would allow for the above objectives to be met. If this deviates from the current structure, develop a rationalization for the proposed new structure and steps required to move the organization to a new structure, • product positioning map, • projected income and balance statements for the next three years. These should indicate the impact of your strategy. This is not an accounting course, but you have taken accounting at this point, so draw templates for basic statements from these experiences. You will primarily be evaluated based on the logic of your information, not on the accounting principles being applied, and • assessment of the present value of your organization: what it would be worth in today’s market in its present state and might be worth if this strategy is successful. The course only touches on valuation, so you will be evaluated based on the logic of your information, not the valuation itself. Phase 3: Strategy Evaluation Draft • Due no later than 11:00 p.m. on Sunday of Unit 8 • Weight 5% of the final grade Instructions Prepare a draft document for review by your professor that includes the following: • an auditing Plan/Balanced Scorecard that will define how objectives are going to be tracked over the next three years and • a contingency plan that outlines what steps can be taken to address unforeseen changes to internal or external environments over the coming three years. Phase 4: Final Report and Presentation • Due no later than 11:00 p.m. on Sunday of Unit 11 • Weight 15% of the final grade Instructions For your final project submission, you will build a complete strategic plan that includes: • Strategy Formulation, • Strategy Implementation, and • Strategy Evaluation Your final submission should include an Executive Summary, which is to be posted in the Strategic Plan Project Discussion forum in Unit 11. The summaries will be reviewed by and discussed among your peers.
