Pain among Adults

The main reason why most adults seek medical care is as a result of chronic pain. The United States estimates approximately 20.4% of grown-ups undergo enduring pain (Dahlhamer et al., 2018). As a result, aches got negative consequences to people and family members, and society. Chronic pain restricts mobility and prevents daily work activities (Eliopoulos, 2018). Healthcare providers require the necessary tools such as self-report intensity, numeric rating scales, verbal descriptor scales, pictorial pain scales, and visual analog scales to assess aches among adults.

The use of self-report tools measures the intensity of pain from no pain to worst pain with numbers or graduated color lines. The device has face pain scales, numerical rating gauges, visual analog scales, and oral descriptor scales. Also, care providers can use a numeric score scale (NRS) involving asking the patients to amount their pain; the scale can range from 0-10. Besides, the verbal descriptor comprises phrases representing pain intensity levels such as; no aching to severe ache; the patient interprets and expresses pain verbally, leading to validity and reliability (Schofield & Abdulla, 2018). The use of pictorial pain scales enables patients to choose the face representing the intensity of pain; the tool effectively assesses pain among adults experiencing mild, moderate, and severe aches.

Despite the effectiveness of self-reporting as the most reliable approach of examining patients among adults, the system got hitches. At first, most senior people with pain problems fail to report the complications due to stoicism beliefs that pain is part of aging; the notion prevents older people from speaking on the body aches. Also, another barrier is a result of underreporting of pain by adults (Schofield & Abdulla, 2018). The aged persons fail to give clear information on pain intensity since they were responsible for informing the care provider.  Lack of adequate education of healthcare providers and the cost concerns have also contributed to the efficacy challenges in incorporating self-report in pain management.
