In Federalist 10 James Madison argues, a government that doesn't do anything is a safe government. He claims there will always be people united by common interests and adverse to the rights of others, but a slow moving government would make it increasingly difficult to carry out schemes of oppression--that by dividing up the population, "expanding the sphere" of interests and diversifying the range of opinions it would be more difficult for bad actors to exert influence.
However, as many of you noted in class today, that does not always seem to be the case.
Please watch the videos listed below and ask yourself: What has changed over the last 240 years? Or was Madison just plain wrong? Are these examples exceptions? Or have people always been able to carry out schemes of oppression? As a reminder, a scheme of oppression is created by anyone who is opposed to the liberty of others. It is when a group of people is trying to infringe on other people's ability to pursue their conception of a good life.
This is a reflection assignment, so there are no wrong answers. Just give yourself time to really think about Madison's theory and how schemes of oppression still manage to surface.
Reflection
The concept of government has become changed in the last 240 years differently. There is no doubt that the government is becoming strict on different bases especially trying to implement certain policies to succeed. However, people can protest for getting their rights. The theory of Madison about the government has become wrong due to the behavior of people forgetting their rights. The concept of Madison that government can spoil the rights of the poor has proved wrong. Now people can maintain their level within the country in different manners. It can be said that Madison is just plain wrong. These examples that have motivated the government to give them importance are no exception because the concept of this protest has become increased. Different movements have increased in America, and various other countries, such as one of the most significant movements is “Black Lives Matter.”
In the past, people always gave importance to their government because they thought that government would protect their rights. Now people have found that the concept that government is the only thing that is giving importance to racism. The concept of racism can be reduced by speaking for rights. Therefore, people who either belong to a white nation or a black nation are participating in protests. The purpose of all these movements and protests is to gain rights so that people can live happy and satisfying lives. There are different rights that people are enjoying just due to giving concentration to this process. The government has passed different laws to reduce the anger of people that they show in their protests. Therefore, it can be said that the theory of Madison has become wrong, and people can speak up for their rights, either living in a developed or developing country. The world has become changed in different manners, which is one of the positive outcomes of democracy.
