Part I

  • Topic
    • The topic I would want to explore is digital literacy among senior citizens as several of the senior citizens I personally know are still having trouble navigating the internet and social media. The importance of this topic lies in the fact that many important communication platforms have now transferred online, and the possible lack of digital media literacy in senior citizens could potentially pose a problem to their access to information.
  • Scope and value
    • The scope of my topic and research would be senior citizens in the United States in order to understand how older Americans have adapted to the expansion of the digital sphere. Understanding this information will give me the ability to cater better to senior citizens in the future by providing avenues for them to have an easier time navigating the digital sphere.
  • Communication Medium
    • In order to communicate my project, I plan to create infographics that are easy to read and understand, and eventually publish these in the platforms often frequented by senior citizens so that they may access the information I will gather from this research. Apart from infographics, I might also add some simple videos in order to grab their attention and make it easier for my target audience to understand.
  • Critical thinking questions
    • Do senior citizens prefer more traditional media platforms such as newspapers, television, and radio in order to access information? Or would they prefer to use digital media platforms if given the chance to learn these?
    • What online platforms do senior citizens often use for communication? Which platforms do they have difficulty with? Are there any particular social media websites that they would want to learn and explore more?

Part II

When thinking of possible sources for my research, I always first think about what kind of information I would need in order to answer my research questions. After that, I would use online databases in order to look for scholarly articles and academic journals in order to ensure that my sources are peer-reviewed and credible. For this particular research, I think it would be good for me to utilize a mix of quantitative surveys and in-depth interviews and focus group discussions in order to get a micro and macro view of the topic at hand. To ensure that my data is relevant to my research, I would again circle back and check if the data I collected will help me answer my research question.
