When audiences can see that you've prepared - that you care about their needs and value their time - they'll want to connect with you and support you, and you'll get people to adopt your ideas." - Nancy Duarte

The most important way to show an audience that you value their time is to invest a lot of your own time into preparing for your Persuasive Presentation. Follow the instructions below to help you organize your persuasive presentation ideas. This preparation stage will allow your audience to best connect with your presentation and support your ideas.

Proceed to the “Instructions” section for detailed instructions

Step One - Using Approved Topic: Step One - Using Approved Topic: The first step to identifying a powerful persuasive speech topic is to solicit audience feedback. Check back to the Module 4 Discussion: Persuasive Speech Topics where you posted three possible persuasive speech topics. Which topic was approved by your instructor? Be sure to begin your Persuasive Presentation Outline by using the best fit topic for this assignment.

Step Two - Audience Analysis: Answer the questions below about your approved topic:

  1. Why should the audience care about this topic?
  2. Why should your audience trust your argument about this topic?
  3. Why are you uniquely qualified to present this information to the audience?
  4. How would the audience benefit by adopting your view?

Step Three - Research: Conduct some in-depth research on your approved topic. Find three potential credible sources of information. Provide the following information for all three sources.

  1. Title, author, date, and URL (if using a web source) for all three sources.
  2. Brief one-paragraph summary of source.
  3. How the source supports your argument.
  4. Where you might use the source in the body of your presentation.

Step Four - Creating Your Outline: Develop your Persuasive Presentation Outline. This presentation will be 7-8 minutes. Remember that an outline is different from an essay. An outline uses bullet points and phrases versus complete sentences. Your outline should contain the following elements clearly labeled:

  • Introduction
    • Attention-getter/hook
    • Persuasive argument
    • Short preview of five main points to support your persuasive argument
  • Body
    • Five main points to support your persuasive argument
      • Support for each of these five main points in the form of research, statistics, personal story, examples, testimony, etc. Be sure to alternate between fact and story for each of your five main points to generate interest and engagement
  • Conclusion
    • Brief summary of five main points
    • Restatement of persuasive argument
    • Clincher or final thought

Proceed to the “Submitting Your Work” section for detailed instructions on how to submit your assignment.

To submit your Module 5 - Assignment: Persuasive Presentation Outline, please include a word processor document including all of the above steps.

INSTRUCTOR'S FEEDBACK BELOW

Great information in your Steps 1 and 2 for this assignment. Good details in the 10 ideas in the Brainstorm list with great ideas that you found interesting, and the three that you narrowed down to Should offensive language be removed from works of classic literature? Has technology helped to connect or isolate people: and Should people with DUI’s lose their driver’s license? These are excellent ideas Gabriel. In your Step 2, your information in the prompt questions was well written where you presented the discussion on 'what side of the argument you will take'; on what information you know about the topic; on what you believe your audience may know about the topic; and in what the experts are saying about the topic was well-written. Good write-up for all three topics. Good luck on your selection for the upcoming persuasive speech. Any one of these topics will be a great persuasive speech.

Step Two

  1. Identifying a Topic

  1. Should people with Multiple DUI's lose their driver's license?

  1.  What argument could you make about this topic?

People with more than one offense of driving under the influence should have their license revoked for up to a year. This is because driving under the influence poses a threat to the driver and other drivers on the road as well. With such a punishment, fewer and fewer people are likely to drink and drive.

  1. What do you already know about this topic? What is your personal experience with the topic?

Currently in Japan people caught driving while under the influence of alcohol lose their license for about 3 months or go to jail for a maximum of 3 years.

  1. What is your audience's familiarity with this topic? Do they already know a lot about it? Is this new for them?

I think the audience is only familiar with the law providing for the punishment of this offense. Some might even think this punishment is too severe. They, therefore, do not know a lot and I believe this speech will bring some information to light in regards to the audience's knowledge.

  1. What do experts say about this topic? Where can you find credible research on this topic?

Credible research on this topic is available from academic journals and experts have shown the effect of drinking and driving laws on car accidents and injuries which was analyzed by comparing the data before and after the stringent laws were enforced.

  1. Overall, has technology helped connect people or isolate them?
  1. What argument could you make about this topic?

Contrary to popular belief, the Internet and mobile phones are not isolating people but enhancing their social worlds.

  1. What do you already know about this topic? What is your personal experience with the topic?

There has been a lot of controversy on the negative effects of social media and many people feel like the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. However, in my personal experience especially during the last two years, we have gotten around to experiencing the connectivity that technology has given us.

  1. What is your audience's familiarity with this topic? Do they already know a lot about it? Is this new for them?

The audience knows a lot about the negative effects of technology and tends to think that the bad overwhelms the good and this speech will provide a different perspective on this topic.

  1. What do experts say about this topic? Where can you find credible research on this topic?

There have been surveys that have been conducted that show that technology does not isolate people but rather connects them. This is however except for people on the extremes that are always on their gadgets and have almost completely neglected the real world.

  1. Should offensive language be removed from works of classic literature?
  1. What argument could you make about this topic?

The use of offensive language in several literary classics has hindered the works from being introduced to young readers in many classrooms. The classics like the works of Mark Twain in The Adventures of Huckle Berry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer contain words that were used in reference to the time the works were written but are no longer appropriate for current political and racial settings. Currently, certain publishers are taking steps to provide edited versions of the books.

  1. What do you already know about this topic? What is your personal experience with the topic?

There are already actions been taken in certain parts of the world to censor the content of classic books to allow the early introduction of the works to young readers.

  1. What is your audience's familiarity with this topic? Do they already know a lot about it? Is this new for them?

I believe the audience is slightly familiar with this topic and there are mixed feelings on whether or not the literature in the books should be revised.

  1. What do experts say about this topic? Where can you find credible research on this topic?

Experts say that it is okay to censor the classic literature works to suit the current political and racial environment and still be able to convey the message that the writer originally intended on putting across. There are numerous scholarly articles and academic journals that provide information on this topic.
