  1. Explain the difference between transformational and transactional leadership?

The role of transactional leaders is to create a structure that communicates the expectations that the followers must meet to earn the rewards and the results of failing to deliver the anticipations. Successful followers are given rewards, and those who fail will face punishments based on metrics that define success and failure.

Transformational leadership involves forming a relationship that leads to a highly motivated fellowship and ethical practice in the leader and the follower(s) (Breevaart & Bakker, 2018). Transformational leaders demonstrate extroversion, confidence, and well-established values and support teamwork and innovation.

  1. What is coalition leadership, and how can it be used to build alliances that can help achieve organizational goals?

Coalition leadership involves developing positive and functional relationships between the leader and the followers. A coalition leadership creates a foundation for developing trust, fostering teamwork, and promoting innovation through integrative and inclusive decision-making (Budish, West, & Gasser, 2015). Thus increasing relationship building for achieving mutual benefits for the organization, leaders, and the followers.

  1. What is Machiavellian-style leadership, and when should it be used?

Machiavellian-style leadership involves using deception and manipulation to control subjects into submitting to the wills of the leader. It is a toxic and manipulative approach to achieving self-interested goals (Budish, West, & Gasser, 2015). It should be used in situations where disclosure of approaches to attaining objectives might undermine the overall possibility of achieving those goals. This is because leaders will build an environment around themselves to support their view of power and ruthless desire for success (Budish, West, & Gasser, 2015).

  1. Explain the difference between soft power and hard power? Describe a situation where you were able to use either. Which did you choose and why?

Hard power is coercive power implemented through economic inducements and military threats. In contrast, soft power is persuasive power based on attraction and emulation. I choose to use soft-power because it fosters positive relationship building and success in achieving the objectives sought after. (Budish, West, & Gasser, 2015)
