CHPL 500 Book Review Assignment Instructions

Overview

In considering the book review the student should select a book that they feel led to pursue.  There is a book for (or based on) each type of chaplaincy. Each book is different. They are all written by different authors, with different perspectives and purposes.

Instructions

Students will write a 5-page critical evaluation of one of the texts listed below, consisting of a summary and critique. The student must provide an introduction that provides background information of the author and a clear purpose for writing the review. The summary must focus on the main ideas and significant themes in the book, as well as an account of the author’s overall purpose in writing. The critique section must contain a well-thought-out critical interaction with the author’s thesis and the main points of the argument he presents in the book. The critique must present the strengths and weaknesses as well as an overall evaluation of the book. The student must provide a conclusion that recommends (or not) the book to an applicable audience. The paper must be written in Turabian footnote citation style.

A quality book critique will model the following:

Introduction:

½ page.

Summary:

1 page.

Critique:

3-4 pages.

Conclusion:

½ page.

In addition to these requirements, the paper must have a proper introduction and conclusion and follow the structure of a standard academic essay (Title page, Introduction, Summary, Critique, Conclusion, Bibliography).
