Instructions for KPI

The purpose of this project is to meet the Key Performance Indicator tasks for Human Growth and Development. A key part of our work as counseling professionals is to develop a number of skills including self-awareness and appropriate self-disclosure. This assignment facilitates selfawareness by exploring your own lifespan development within the context of the human lifespan and developmental theories covered in the course. This assignment also encourages appropriate self-disclosure.

1. 5 to 7-page research paper in APA format that describes your own lifespan development.

Focus on influences that you believe impacted your life, both positive and negative. In this paper you are to (1) demonstrate your knowledge of human development by synthesizing and integrating theories of development and learning with events and influences in your life, (2) specify a developmental issue/task for each life stage as defined by the developmental theory you choose, (3) develop a plan for the future of how you might expect to cope with future life stages. (4) discuss how your life experiences inform how you will approach your work with future clients. (5) Include a short wellness plan to help you prevent burnout and compassion fatigue

“How to Pass the Human Growth KPI Paper”

  • Theories of Individual and Family Development (Rubric Criterion #1) When selecting a theory of individual and human development- Pick ONE main theory that you identify with (how your life has been and has evolved). This could be for example Erickson's theory, Freud, or Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory. These are a few, however the textbook has identified more. *Suggestion: select one that corresponds your life in order to provide detail about the theory AND your life. The theory should be discussed in DETAIL (Why did you pick this theory?) and integrate the stages of theories with your life. (For example, if you pick Erickson you should talk about EACH stage and discuss your life through EACH stage). The paper shouldn't simply talk about the theory separately from your life, there should be an INTEGRATION and SYNTHESIZING of the theory and your life (Information should be interwoven).
  • Theories of learning (Rubric Criterion #2) that you identify with and discuss why it is important to you. *Students who lose points due to lack of discussion of why it is important to them. The theories of learning are in your textbook (Pgs. 28- 29). Examples of these theories of learning include: Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development, Vygotsky's Sociocultural Perspective, Bandura (observational learning) to name a few. Discuss which one fits your learning up to this point and why? What affected your learning growing up? Again, integrate this into your paper.
  • Theories of Normal and Abnormal Personality Development (Rubric Criterion #3) you simply need to talk about your chosen theory and how it relates to your personality and life development. Examples: If you selected Freud you should discuss the id, ego, superego and how it relates to how your personality developed. If you selected Erickson, discuss how your personality developed throughout the stages as it relates to personality development (i.e trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame, etc).
  • Biological, Neurological, and Physiological Factors (Rubric Criterion #4) Discuss the next stages in your life that you have yet to achieve. Example: Middle Adulthood, Late Adulthood, Oldest-Old Elderhood. This will depend on whatever life stage you are currently in. Discuss each stage to follow and factors that will affect you moving forward (This may vary depending on the person, achievements or challenges, resilience, expectation to complete challenges, what is required to be successful at upcoming stages in your life?)
  • Systemic and Environmental Factors (Rubric Criterion #5) Discuss systemic and environmental factors growing up in your life. We discussed Bronfenbrenner in class lectures. Review material in PowerPoint and textbook pgs 32- 33, then incorporate these points in your paper. Most students will cover these throughout their paper when integrating theory with life events. However, double check that you cover this in detail. (How did these systemic and environmental factors affect your development, functioning and behavior growing up?)
  • Impact of Trauma, Disaster, Crisis, and Addiction (Rubric Criterion #6) Students clearly and accurately described issues related to trauma, disaster, crisis, and addiction. Discuss how trauma, disaster, crisis and addiction impacted development at different stages. Integrates theoretical language and personal experiences. Strongly supported by professional literature.
  • Wellness Plan (Rubric Criterion #7) MANY STUDENTS FORGET THIS.  Please identify at least 3 wellness activities that you plan to incorporate in your life (discuss a wellness plan) to combat burnout and to be successful in your current and future life stages. PLEASE DO NOT LIST THESE, they should be incorporated in the body of your paper. How do you plan to be healthy and maintain it and moving forward?  These should be specific and tailored to you.
  • References & APA Style (Rubric Criterion #8) To receive full points; more than 5 professional references (BOOKS or PEER-REVIEWED journal articles), however five are all that you need to get partial credit. use APA style, and proofread your paper thoroughly to ensure few or no errors. Credit sources appropriately and follow the Academic Honesty/Plagiarism Policy.

In order to pass the KPI, every Criteria in the rubric must be either "met" or "exceeded"
