In Week 1, I asked you not to go to Cliff Notes, Spark Notes, etc. For this first essay, I am asking you to read a good academic essay about one of the stories and select the essay from our library's database. The best ones to use for an article on literature are: Bloom's Literature, Literary Reference Center Plus, ProQuest Central.
1.) Select the story you want to write about: "Hills Like White Elephants," "The End of Something," "The Three Day Blow," or "Indian Camp."
2.) Put the name of your selected story in the search box of the database you selected.
3.) Select Full Text.
4.) Select the article/essay you want to use for your essay. There's a way to put the article/essay in your library folder, or email it to yourself, or print it. There's also the citation you will need when you write your own essay. Since this is an English class, we will use MLA.
5.) Read the article/essay you chose. Now you are ready to write your own essay.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS
This is a five paragraph essay MINIMUM. Of course it can be longer.
Paragraph structure:
Paragraph 1 - Introduction. Just a few sentences with your thesis sentence as the final sentence.
Paragraphs 2-4 - Body paragraphs where you use details from the story and from the essay/article you are using to support your thesis. As you use these supports, you need to cite them in MLA format.
Paragraph 5 - Conclusion. Just a few sentences that refer back to your thesis.
Works Cited Page - This should include, in proper MLA format, your story and the article/essay from the Database.
ESSAY TOPIC
Your essay should be focused on your first reading of the story and how reading the article/essay from the Database changed your thoughts about the story or deepened your understanding of it.
THERE WILL BE DISCUSSION BOARD FOR YOU TO POST THE STORY AND ARTICLE/ESSAY YOU FOUND.
THERE WILL BE TWO ATTEMPTS TO SUBMIT YOUR ESSAY THROUGH TURNITIN. AFTER THE FIRST SUBMISSION DURING THIS WEEK 4, I WILL SEND YOU COMMENTS. THEN THERE WILL BE A FINAL SUBMISSION FOR A GRADE DURING WEEK 5.
