A major challenge of the modern era is the transition to a bio-based economy. New plant products are a major key to successful bio-based economy, but to develop breakthrough technology we need to understand plant metabolism and apply our knowledge. 
In this assignment, you will explore how plant primary metabolism is essential to develop new products for a more sustainable future. This will include, but is not restricted to biofuels, fast growing renewable recourses and agriculture. 
The assignment should consist of a general introduction on plant metabolism, revision of present literature, discussion including your own ideas, a short conclusion and references. Your assignment should cover the following questions: Why is plant primary metabolism essential for a sustainable future? What examples exist (chose one example to go more into the detail e.g. biofuels, protein production; no limitations and up to you what you want to focus on)? What are the present limitations? How can we overcome them (e.g. bioengineering)? What are the possibilities/limitations in New Zealand?
