For this assessment students are required to critique an existing primary health care program. Provide a critique focussing on the delivery of the program in a community of your choice.

You may choose a community/group or aggregate of people, or a narrower focus such as a government school.

The program must be relevant to community health. You may select one of the focus areas listed below, identifying a program which relates to the focus areas and is available to the community in which you live, work or have a general interest. Students may also select a program which does not fit with the identified focus areas for this essay in consultation with the  Unit Coordinator (for example if you have a special interest which is not covered here). Ensure that you are considering a program (as defined in your text Taylor et.al, 2021) not an individual activity or session, which may be stand alone or part of a program.

Suggested focus areas

  • Prevention of communicable disease
  • Improving physical activity
  • Improving oral health
  • Reducing obesity
  • Improving social and emotional wellbeing
  • Providing parenting support
  • Preventing injury and poisoning

Essential items to be addressed are:

  • A brief description of the chosen community. It is recommended that this is the targeted population that you are focusing on in future assignments.
  • Use secondary data sources to demonstrate community needs related to the focus  area/ program of choice
  • A summary of the primary health care program
  • Within the discussion, summarise how primary health care principles are evident in the program you have selected
  • Critique the extent to which the program addresses community need, and highlight primary health care factors that determine the effectiveness of the program.

Essential information required to complete this assessment can be found in the guidelines (below) and assessment rubric.
