Co-management is a model that has been proposed to alleviate the challenges experienced in the primary care departments, where more than one clinician is involved in care delivery. This has been regarded as among the most effective models in the critical units, and care providers should consider its adoption to promote efficiency in these departments. Currently, patients in the critical care departments are taken care of by independent clinicians. Therefore, co-management will promote efficiency and eliminate defects associated with the current model. Collaboration between the nurses and physician is crucial to the promotion of wholesome and quality care to patients. Poor collaboration between the nurses and physicians in the care delivery system poses the risk of compromising the quality of care the patients desperately need. The nurses do not have the necessary autonomy in their practice because of the restrictions posed by the physicians. As a result, nurses are unable to fully utilize their skills to offer care to their patients independently. Poor supervisory relationships between the nurses and physicians are jeopardizing the quality of care that patients need. Patients in critical care units die due to a lack of adequate attention. One major cause of errors is lack of collaboration and communication among healthcare professionals, which increases cases of death and disabilities by up to 6.5 percent. However, with increased collaboration between physicians and nurses this can be eliminated (Farzi et al., 2017).

Norful et al. (2018) has proposed a co-management model of operation in the critical care units to reduce errors which increase cases of disability and deaths in critical care units. However, the efficiency of co-management is enshrined in three aspects of the organization. For this model to work, there is a need for improved communication, collaboration, and mutual respect among the nurses and physicians. The autonomy of the nurse professionals should be respected and the physicians must be willing to co-manage with nurses. This will reduce workloads and consequential burnouts and fatigue among primary care professionals. This means that nurses and physicians should bring their expertise into operations in the critical care units and lead to better patient care.

Franklin et al. (2015) conducted an integrative literature review to study the impact of inter-professional relationships between healthcare teams by investigating whether there was a mutual understanding of roles, values, and the goal of healthcare teams. The study indicates that there is a close correlation between healthcare teams. Collaboration is an important tool that will enable healthcare teams to achieve patient healthcare goals within healthcare units. Therefore, healthcare organizations should encourage a healthcare model that promotes co-management where nurses and physicians bring their expertise on board to promote better patient outcomes.

Different organizations have identified the importance of teamwork and collaboration among healthcare professionals to address the prevailing issue of burnout and fatigue among healthcare professionals. With the discovery of the need to deliver safe, high-quality care promotion of teamwork, professional collaborations, as well as across disciplines has become a priority in modern healthcare organizations. Many organizations have adopted teamwork and collaboration models among their workforce as a way of promoting productivity. With this in mind, healthcare organizations have not been left behind because they aim at offering quality care to patients. The healthcare system plays an important role in our lives, which requires appropriate models of workforce management to promote efficiency in care delivery. Collaboration among the nurses and physicians is becoming an instrument aspect of promoting efficiency in care delivery (Rosen et al., 2018).

Strategies used to address the Healthcare Issue

With the number of physicians in the healthcare delivery system declining, hospitals are straining to establish a balance between the rising number of patients and the few physicians. As a result, healthcare policymakers have proposed a nurse-physician co-management model that will alleviate the strain among the physicians even though little evidence supports the model. However, the model is more effective in the case where organizations have an established nurse-physician model of operation. The model has been effective in promoting positive patient outcomes in terms of the reduced number of deaths in critical care units, reduced medical errors as a result of fatigue as well as a decline in burnout and fatigue associated with long working hours since nurses can easily implement duties of a physician (Norful et al., 2019).

However, implementing a co-management model is not as easy as it might seem to be because it is associated with increased competition among nurses and physicians. The nurses seem to compete with physicians, which in turn leads to increased restrictive supervision compromising the goal of the organization that proposes a co-management model. On the other hand, some nurses do not have the professional capacity to implement duties. In addition, practice nurses do not have the proper licensing to implement some duties making it difficult to fully implement the model (Norful et al., 2019). However, with the changing health environment, nurses are being trained to implement some of the duties traditionally performed by physicians, which would lead to better implementation of the model.
