Hello Class,

After reading the chapter for this week’s discussion, I had not thought about the Bill of Rights as one of the federal laws in protecting an individual’s personally identifiable information (PII).  The fourth amendment states that every person has a right to privacy. Three acts that protect PII are The Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Right to Financial Privacy Act, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.   There are many other federal and state laws besides the ones mentioned above that protect PII.

The government should continue to write laws that protect PII and make sure the rules are clear and concise.  They should also keep up to date with the advancements of technology.  The government should also be accountable for the laws that are passed and not violate them either.  Three measures organizations and individuals should make sure all their PII are stored safely, only share what is needed to keep the information protected.

Thanks,

Samantha Kemble
