Chloromethane, also known as methyl chloride or monochloromethane, is a colorless gas which melts at -97.4 °C, and boils at -23.8 °C.

It is extremely flammable, and there are also concerns about the toxicity of the gas; for this reason, it is no longer used in consumer products.

It is a haloalkane and can be obtained by boiling a mixture of methanol, sulfuric acid, and sodium chloride. This method is not the same as the method used today, but the two methods are similar to each other.
