Thermal differs from heat in that thermal energy is not being transferred. Thermal energy remains as part of the internal energy of the system and is not in transit like heat. Simply put, heat is energy outside the system and thermal energy is within the system. The physical units for heat include joules per second, watts, and calories per second. Heat cannot be contained nor can it be stored. An example of thermal energy is the Sun.
