Government Final Exam

Due by midnight, 5/26/2021

For the following questions, please write an essay answer for each. Essays should be at least 1 page single-spaced using Times New Roman 12 point font. Please put all of your essays into one document. Handwritten work is NOT acceptable. Each essay is worth 25 points. The Final Exam is worth 20% of your semester grade.

You are to ONLY USE your textbook, class materials, and readings from this quarter to answer the questions. If I discover that you have used internet sources, I will consider this a breach of the exam and give you a zero.

1. Discuss US-China relations since 1973. What are the main areas of agreement? What are the main areas of conflict? Specifically, discuss the US-China-Taiwan relationship. Do you think this will lead to a US-China conflict in the future?

2. Discuss Putinism. What are his main complaints about the US and NATO? What factors drive Putin to be aggressive towards the US and Europe? Why do you think he’s pushing Ukraine so much?

3. Discuss the roots of the attacks on 9-11-2001. Where did Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda come from? Why did he want to attack the US? How did the conflicts in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Chechnya, and Bosnia tie into the 9-11 attacks?

4. Discuss the Global War on Terror. How did the US respond in Afghanistan after 9-11? Why is the US still there? Why did the Bush administration feel it was necessary to invade Iraq? How did the US invasion of Iraq create ISIS?

5. This year we have looked at political ideology as it relates to civil rights (issues such as ending racial disparities, women’s rights, LGBTQ, etc.), economics (the role of government in the economy, taxation, spending, etc.) and foreign policy/military policy. How do most Democrats and Republicans differ in each of these areas?

6. We have discussed the importance of civic duty throughout the year. What things should Americans do to fulfill their responsibilities as citizens? Should we be doing more?
