Studying American literature gives us the opportunity to look back in history to see what all Christians had to go through and the sacrifices they have made throughout time. In history, many countries were using Christianity to control their people and often told them how to worship and how to live. Like other forms of evidence throughout time, we evolve, overcome, and adapt. For example: Medieval times, the church controlled their people and punished them for minor offenses; claimed to be against the church. Today, we worship and go to church as a choice.

              Studying American literature can show us that God wanted us to be free. That included religion. We as individually free people, serve our purpose to the holy spirit in different ways, instead of one way. Like a policeman to protect his community, a nurse to care for the sick and wounded, and a solider to fight for his country’s rights. Studying American literature, especially at Liberty University, can help us grow closer to God by continuing to live in his image and know that we are free to serve God in our own way.

              Literature is used as an important tool to teach us about god and what all he has done for us. According to Belasco and Johnson, after Wycliffe translated the Bible from Latin to English, King Henry VIII ordered the publication of the first official Bible in English.  This was done to allow more people or preachers to be able to read, study, and worship the Bible. Today, the Bible is published in many different languages so we all have the ability to read, study, and worship.
