Common Errors to Avoid

  1. Paper margins: follow the EOM guidelines

  1. The research problem should not be answerable with a “yes/no” response; otherwise, it probably will not be worthy of a master’s level capstone research project.

  1. All of the following must be directly aligned with each other: research problem (topic statement), research purpose statement, theoretical framework, and significance of the research.

  2. Avoid anthropomorphism; do not assign human characteristics to nonliving matter.

  1. Avoid run-on and fragmented sentences, and other grammatical errors.

  1. Always provide at least one Bluebook citation to support every fact or assertion that you make.  Do that sentence-by-sentence, not paragraph-by paragraph.

  1. Avoid placing undue accent on the authors (e.g., the author stated...  authors indicated…) and rather change the sentence’s emphasis to the core ideas and main findings.  Use straightforward, declarative statements to help maintain objectivity.

[AB1]The title should indicate the proposed study’s contents; it should be about 10-15 words in length.

[AB2]Month and year of expected graduation

[AB3]Refer to the APUS End of Program Assessment Manual for Graduate Students (EOP Manual), Graduate Writing Center in our library, and course resources for additional concept paper information.

[AB4]The proposed topic must directly reflect the learner’s program of study.

[AB5]Problem Statement (approximately 250 to 300 words) Note: Precise description of a concise problem statement is key to a successful concept paper proposal.  The problem statement briefly explains a legal problem or observation, as well as succinctly identifies and documents the need for and importance of the study.  Clearly and objectively describe and document the problem that prompted your desire to conduct this study.  Include appropriate sources to document the existence of a problem worthy of master’s level research.

[AB6]Purpose statement Within a single paragraph (2 – 4 sentences supporting your topic sentence), the purpose statement should succinctly describe the study’s intent.  It should flow straight from the problem statement and explicitly address the reason why the study is required.

Start the purpose statement with a brief sentence that shows that the study’s: (a) method will be traditional legal research and (b) strategic goal is __(varies depending upon the topic).  For example, “The purpose of this legal study is to ....  .

[AB7]Present the theoretical or conceptual framework(s) linked to the study.  Offer supporting resources, especially those published within the last 5 years, for each assertion.  Confirm the discussion is complete, organized, and flows rationally from the research statement and purpose statements.  Verify that your approach has never been tried before in exactly the same way that you propose to do in your study.

[AB8]Establish why the study is vital and describe the contribution(s) that you expect to make to the legal field of study. Also explain why this study is needed and how answering the proposed study problem and research purpose can benefit society, academia, etc. This paragraph parallels the problem statement, which outlines the negative consequences if the study is not done, while the significance specifies the positive outcomes of carrying out the study.
