Dystopian Literature Summative Assessment

The novels 1984, The Handmaid's Tale, and Brave New World portray futuristic worlds where the totalitarian states have effectively manipulated the thoughts and actions of their population using various controlling methods that deny citizens their individuality and freedom. In all three novels, leaders have attempted to create a Utopian society, one that they consider to maintain peace and stability, which have become oppressive and tyrannical. Today, there are strong debates and questions about the extraordinary breakthroughs in science, such as cloning; in communications through the Internet with its never ending pool of knowledge and the never ending movement to censor it; in the increasing level of immersion in entertainment and the propaganda of fake news as reality. People facing the 21st century are trying to determine whether these new realities of life will enhance it and bring life as they know it to an unprecedented level, or if these new products will contribute and perhaps even cause the destruction of society and life.

Prompt: Your assignment is to choose a specific, current, and relevant topic based on the ideas presented in The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984 or Brave New World, which you will research with the objective of creating a theme on which you will express your opinion.
