Assignment 3: Problem/Risk Characterization (SLO 1, 3, 5, 7; 20% of course grade) -- You’ve already begun to analyze your community topic from Assignment 2 using core environmental health concepts and the epi triangle. This week you will begin work on the next assignment, due at the end of week 4.  Use your search terms to find more quality references. You have 2 weeks to complete this paper.  In this paper, you will conduct a deeper dive and apply further environmental health and toxicology concepts to better understanding of the problem and its causes. This important background research will inform the recommendations you will be making to the community in the next assignments. This paper will answer the following key questions:

    • Toxicity (How does this agent cause the disease or toxic effects in the body, and what organs or systems are targeted? Is there a safe dose with no effect (no observable effect level)?
    • Disease Surveillance (How prevalent is this health problem or disease in the population? Is it measured? What are the trends?)
    • Sources of exposure (How are people most likely to be exposed? What is the length of time people in the community are exposed? Is it acute or chronic exposure?)
    • Exposure monitoring (Who is monitoring this exposure and what data are available? Are there biomarkers in the body that can be measured?)
    • Are there ecological impacts to ecosystems, wildlife or agriculture?
