At the top of each essay, please specify the full title, your name and the name of the course. You may have a full list of references at the end of each essay if required. Please ensure that each page is numbered and with a cover sheet. I would be grateful if the essays are typed and double spaced as this makes reading easier. The essay must be written in TIMES NEW ROMAN AND FONT SIZE 12 (a point will taken if you do otherwise). The length of any assignment should be 750 words or more unless otherwise agreed. Please specify the number of words at the end of the essay. When writing your essay, plan the answer carefully before you begin writing. Make a list of the points you want to cover and then systematically work through them. With some assignments, it may be worthwhile to make this list before you start the background reading. These points can then be used as the basis for headed subsections or paragraphs within your essay. You must structure your essay into THREE parts. That is, your essay must have an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The introduction could be the summary of the case scenario. The words introduction and conclusion must be written at the beginning and end of your essay. DO NOT WRITE THE WORD BODY IN YOUR ESSAY. The body of you essay is the answer to the questions. Don’t get sidetracked, always make sure that you are answering the questions specifically. If an essay has two parts pay attention to both. Don’t organize your essay into a beginning, middle and an end where everything is repeated three times. Have a brief introduction informing the reader about how you have organized your essay. This should include a few sentences which set out the scope, aim and structure of the essay. A careful way of discovering how to do this effectively is to study the structure of the opening sections of the readings you will be referred to during the course. Try to avoid the use of too many overly short one or two paragraphs. Remember the aim is to construct an argument not to demonstrate that you are aware of all the information in the area. To this end, make sure that each section and sentence within it logically contributes to the point you are trying to get across. A good essay is characterized by what is left out as much as what is left in. You should therefore expect to see your essay evolve through five or six editing sessions, rather than expect to get it right in one go. You should also make sure that there are no spelling mistakes or typos and that you use capitals, apostrophes and commas in the right places. Careful proof reading should help to remove these problems. Throughout your essay, give the reader ample “signposts” as to where you are going and where you have got to in your argument. If a point is worth making, spell it out don’t rely on the reader implying the sense of what you have said from a combination of disjointed statements. In the conclusion try and give your own judgment on the issues in the light of the evidence you have reviewed. Always substantiate your arguments by reference to what you have read; statistics you have looked at; and case studies where appropriate. Make full reference of all arguments, statistics, and especially quotes. Quotes should be in inverted commas with a reference to the page number of the source. With references use the APA style of referencing. Finally, don’t plagiarize or transpose. Avoid sweeping generalizations, note form and excessive use of numbering.
