FINAL RESEARCH ESSAY--HOMEGOING

Historical research project: To write a historical research book like Homegoing, the author had to have done significant historical research--about Ghana, the slave trade, and American history.

Select an area of research in the book that you would like to explore in more detail and provide an organized research essay exploring that research topic. Try to narrow your focus as much as possible so you don’t get too much information.

Paper specifications:

  1. Paper should be 7-8 pages long--same formatting as other papers (150 points)
  2. Annotated bibliography of five sources (3 scholarly journals) (50 points)
  3. Use Chabot College library database for research (not google/wikipedia!).
  4. Paper due on MAY 28 at 5PM (NO LATE PAPERS ACCEPTED--YOU MUST DO THE FINAL TO PASS ENGLISH 1)

Outlining is very important in writing an organized final research paper.

Please ATTACH a copy of your outline for the research paper and COMMENT on another classmate's outline. For these longer papers, I suggest breaking your paper into 3-4 sections of 2-3 pages each to meet the page requirements.

Here is a SAMPLE outline: You can organize it however you like, this is just an example!

  • Para 1: introduction on your historical issue as mentioned in Homegoing. Where do you see this research issue come up? Why is it important in the novel?
    • Thesis: In Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi describes _____. [provide your argument about that historical event]
  • Section 1:
    • background section: Where does the author use this event? How does it affect the trajectory of the book?
      • cite to Homegoing
      • Is this a commonly known event? Something taught in history classes?
      • Where does that event occur in Homegoing? Why do you think she includes it?
      • you can use interviews/literary reviews of the book here also
  • Section 2: Discussion of your research--background
    • provide historical background leading up to the event
    • use your research here
  • Section 3: Narrow research further--can you find stories of individuals affected by that event?
    • good place to use research
    • any controversial perspectives on this issue?
    •
  • Section 4: Conclusion--restate your thesis, perhaps narrowing it even further. What questions do we still have about this issue?

Please post your own outline as an attachment, don't cut and paste as it makes it hard to scroll through. Be sure to comment on a classmate's post--any questions? More places to add information? Do the section breaks make sense?
